Green Combined Power Limited is a specialist engineering company based in Leicester, operating nationally across the UK. Our team of skilled engineers maintains and services industrial gas engine-driven Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants, primarily located at commercial greenhouse growers' sites.
Due to continued growth, we are looking to appoint a motivated and multi-skilled Field Service Engineer to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer or mechanic looking to develop their career within a specialist and growing engineering sector.
Full training and support will be provided, making this role suitable for candidates with transferable mechanical, electrical and diagnostic skills, including those from automotive, HGV, commercial vehicle, plant or other mechanical engineering backgrounds.
The Role
As a Field Service Engineer, you will be responsible for the planned maintenance, servicing, fault finding and repair of industrial gas engine and CHP equipment.
The role will primarily be based at customer sites in the Cottingham and Hull area, although occasional travel and work at other sites within the company's operations will be required.
You will report to the Service Manager and work closely with our remote Service Desk, responding to both planned and reactive maintenance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out routine servicing and preventative maintenance on CHP and associated equipment.
- Diagnosing faults and carrying out breakdown repairs efficiently and safely.
- Mechanical and electrical fault finding and diagnostics.
- Servicing and maintaining gas engines, generators, CO₂ catalyst and heat recovery systems.
- Assisting with the installation and commissioning of new equipment.
- Identifying and ordering the parts required to complete repairs.
- Completing job sheets, maintenance records and other relevant documentation accurately.
- Managing your own workload and working independently while maintaining high standards of service.
- Communicating professionally with customers, suppliers, colleagues and management.
- Participating in the weekend call-out rota, currently 1 in 3 weekends, involving light repairs and equipment resets.
- Overtime available along with call-out standby fee/ call-out OT in addition to advertised salary range.
About You
We are looking for someone who is practical, reliable and self-motivated, with strong problem-solving skills and a genuine interest in mechanical and electrical engineering.
You do not necessarily need previous CHP experience. We welcome applications from individuals with relevant transferable skills and experience, particularly those who have worked as a Vehicle Technician, Car Mechanic, HGV Mechanic, Commercial Vehicle Technician, Plant Engineer, Maintenance Engineer or Service Engineer.
The successful candidate will receive training and support to develop the specialist knowledge required to work on our equipment.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Previous hands-on mechanical engineering, maintenance, repair or diagnostic experience.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Experience working with engines, machinery, vehicles or mechanical equipment.
- Ability to work independently and manage your own time effectively.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable completing paperwork and electronic job records.
- Good communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with customers and colleagues.
- Computer literate, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Full, clean UK driving licence.
Qualifications
Ideally, you will hold a relevant engineering qualification, such as:
- ONC, HNC or City & Guilds in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; or
- A recognised apprenticeship or relevant qualification in Automotive, HGV, Commercial Vehicle or Mechanical Engineering.
However, we recognise that valuable engineering skills can also be gained through practical experience, and applications from suitably experienced candidates with relevant backgrounds are encouraged.
Desirable Skills and Experience
The following would be advantageous but are not essential, as training can be provided:
- Experience working with Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems, gas engines or industrial power generation equipment.
- Experience working on engine manufacturers such as Cummins, Jenbacher or Caterpillar (CAT).
- Experience with automotive or commercial vehicle diagnostics.
- Electrical fault finding experience, including 24V DC control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
- Knowledge of generators, industrial engines or associated control systems.
- Experience with CO₂ catalyst systems.
