Marketing Automation Manager
Location: Stroud / Hybrid Salary: Depending on experience Contract: Permanent / Full‑time
Reports: Digital Marketing Executive - CRM
About the Role
We’re looking for a hands‑on Marketing Automation Manager whose primary responsibility is technical execution in Salesforce Marketing Cloud — building, optimising, and maintaining automated journeys and email communications.
Your core focus is to be the technical automation lead: owning journey build, data structures, logic, triggers, segmentation, and multichannel execution. You will ensure Ecotricity delivers timely, relevant, high‑quality communications across the customer lifecycle.
You will also play a supporting role in lifecycle growth — contributing insight, optimisation ideas, and data‑led recommendations. This role is for someone who loves building, solving technical challenges, and making automation work harder.
You’ll work closely with CRM, Digital, UX, Data, Customer Service, Product, Compliance, Project Teams and Brand — as well as colleagues across the Green Britain Group — to ensure our automated journeys support a seamless, insight‑led customer experience.
What You’ll Do
1. Marketing Automation & Journey Build (Primary Responsibility)
- Build, test, and optimise multichannel automated journeys in SFMC Journey Builder across acquisition, onboarding, engagement, retention, save, and win‑back.
- Create and maintain Data Extensions, segmentation logic, entry criteria, decision splits, and exit rules.
- Implement personalisation, dynamic content, predictive scoring, and automation to improve relevance and performance.
- Integrate behavioural triggers, customer service events, product triggers, and real‑time signals — not just email.
- Maintain and evolve templates, content blocks, and personalisation rules.
- Uphold high standards of QA, testing, and data governance.
2. Email Planning, Build & Delivery
- Deliver the day‑to‑day email plan in partnership with the CRM Executive.
- Build emails using HTML/CSS, templates, dynamic content, and personalisation rules.
- Execute segmentation and audience selection for campaigns and automated sends.
- Manage end‑to‑end campaign setup: data selection, audience checks, QA, approvals, and deployment.
- Ensure all sends follow best practice for deliverability, accessibility, compliance, and brand consistency.
- Monitor performance and make recommendations to improve engagement and conversion.
3. Lifecycle Support
- Identify execution‑level opportunities to improve retention, churn rate, CLV, and customer progression.
- Provide insight and optimisation ideas to support lifecycle planning.
- Contribute to prioritisation of journey improvements through strong execution and data‑led recommendations.
- Support the development and optimisation of existing journeys such as Recommend a Friend.
4. Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Customer Service to ensure journeys support a first‑class customer experience and BAU communications.
- Work with Brand, Creative and Content teams to ensure communications are engaging, accessible, and aligned to brand.
- Collaborate with Product teams to integrate product triggers and support product adoption.
- Work with colleagues across the Green Britain Group to share insight and align lifecycle approaches.
- Support Digital and UX teams on top‑of‑funnel conversion journeys and behavioural triggers.
- Work with the B2B marketing team to ensure communications are aligned and CRM issues are surfaced.
5. Governance, Quality & Best Practice
- Ensure all communications are compliant, accessible, and aligned with Ecotricity’s values.
- Champion a culture of test‑and‑learn, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain high standards of data governance and operational excellence.
- Maintain quality control of SFMC data.
About You
You’re a marketing automation specialist first and foremost — someone who loves building journeys, solving technical challenges, and making automation work harder.
You think beyond the channel, bringing ideas and insight that help improve customer experience, acquisition, and retention — but your strength is execution, not strategy ownership.
Essential Technical Experience
To be successful in this role, you must have:
- 2+ years hands‑on experience building automated journeys in Salesforce Marketing Cloud
- Strong experience with Journey Builder, Email Studio, Automation Studio, Contact Builder
- Ability to build and maintain Data Extensions, segmentation logic, entry criteria, and decision splits
- Strong understanding of HTML/CSS for email build
- Experience with dynamic content, personalisation, and behavioural triggers
- Experience with QA, deliverability, accessibility, and compliance
- Confidence working with data, segmentation, and behavioural insight
- Understanding of GDPR, consent management, and data governance
Nice to Have
- Experience in the energy sector or another regulated industry
- Experience with AMPscript, SQL, or advanced personalisation
- Experience with app messaging, push notifications, or in‑product messaging
- Experience supporting top‑of‑funnel conversion journeys
Practical Skills Test Requirement
Shortlisted candidates will complete a practical SFMC task (journey build or email build) to demonstrate hands‑on capability. This ensures candidates have the technical depth required for the role.

Ecotricity is Britain's overall greenest energy company- it’s more than just green energy – the breadth and depth of our work on green issues is unmatched. When we started back in 1995, we were the first company in the world to provide a new kind of electricity - the green kind.
Our mission was, and remains, to change the way energy is made and used in Britain - by replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy.
We don't just supply green energy, we use the money from our customers' bills to make it ourselves too – we have built windmills and sun parks in Britain. We call this turning 'bills into mills'.
We don't just focus on energy though- we built the Electric Highway, Britain's leading network of electric vehicle charging points; we helped Forest Green Rovers become the greenest football club in the world; and we launched Britain's greenest mobile phone service, Ecotalk, where they use the money from their customers' bills to protect and regenerate Britain's lost rainforests.
Ecotricity is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to providing equality for all.
