We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our Microbiology team. Reporting to the Microbiology Section Leader, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting microbiological and barrier performance testing for textiles, natural fibres, recycled materials, and personal protective equipment (PPE). This position offers an excellent opportunity for a science graduate with a passion for laboratory work to develop technical expertise within an ISO 17025 accredited testing environment.
The role involves preparing samples, conducting a range of microbiological and barrier performance tests, accurately recording results, and ensuring all work is carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with quality standards and laboratory procedures.
Responsibilities
- Work within an ISO 17025 accredited quality management system, adhering to laboratory procedures and quality requirements.
- Undertake training programmes and achieve competency in designated testing methods.
- Prepare microbiological media, test samples, reagents, and laboratory equipment for routine testing activities.
- Set up and operate test cells and specialised laboratory equipment.
- Perform microbiological testing, including bioburden determination, antimicrobial efficacy assessments, RT-PCR GMO analysis, synthetic blood penetration testing, and viral penetration testing.
- Carry out serial dilutions, plating techniques, colony enumeration, and associated microbiological calculations.
- Record test activities, observations, and results accurately in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Operate autoclaves for the sterilisation of media, equipment, and laboratory waste.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness through routine cleaning, decontamination, and housekeeping activities.
- Support equipment maintenance, calibration, and performance verification activities.
- Assist with method development, validation, and proficiency testing programmes.
- Comply with all laboratory health, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Provide support to the Microbiology Section Leader and wider laboratory team as required.
- Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role and business needs.

Education and Experience
- Degree qualified in Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Science, or a related life sciences discipline.
- Previous laboratory experience within a microbiology or scientific testing environment is desirable.
- Understanding of microbiological techniques, including aseptic handling, dilutions, plating, and colony counting.
- Familiarity with quality systems and accredited laboratory environments would be advantageous.
- Ability to perform laboratory calculations and interpret scientific data accurately.
