The post holder is the Designated Officer for Waste Management, the professional lead responsible for ensuring board-wide compliance with waste legislation and best practice, and for contributing to NHS Scotland’s waste and circular economy initiatives.
Ensure expenditure is within budget and all services are in compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, legal and Health & Safety requirements.
Apply and develop environmental best practice, ensuring compliance with statutory legislation, health & safety, Scottish Health Technical Notes (SHTN’s), National Waste Management Action Plans etc. Ensuring compliance with Scottish Governments Waste Management Strategy.
Implement and monitor the Board wide procurement of all waste contracts, ensuring the cost to NHSL is minimised, whilst monitoring the performance of waste services. Develop and implement policy and waste minimisation and participate in circular economy strategies for waste management across NHSL.
This will involve working with colleagues in the Sustainability Department to develop the communications campaign “Sustainability Action” to drive awareness around environmental compliance and resource use to staff and the wider public.
The working pattern for this role is - Monday - Thursday 9am - 5pm & Friday 9am - 3.30pm
The Property and Support Services Division (PSSD) provides non-clinical support services to all healthcare premises owned or occupied by NHS Lanarkshire.
The department works closely with other departments within NHS Lanarkshire and also with external organisations, including, the Health and Safety Executive, Audit Scotland, Health Facilities Scotland, the Scottish Executive Health Department and Local Authorities.
The department is split into eight different sections and is overseen by the General Manager for Property and Support Services Division.

Educated to degree level in a waste / environmental / facilities management related subject.

Full membership of a professional body relevant to the post such as the Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CIWM) would be advantageous.

Specialist technical knowledge of waste management with extensive experience within a large complex organisation, preferably in the Health Sector.

Advanced knowledge of risk assessment processes, COSHH, risk management including health & safety legislation

A sound knowledge of financial and procurement processes/systems.

Demonstrate effective and highly developed leadership skills and be able to work on own initiative as well as a proactive member of a team demonstrating skills to motivate others
