Job Function:
This role is pivotal in ensuring our transport operations run smoothly and efficiently. You will be responsible for overseeing the resourcing, organising and supervising of the transport activities. Emphasis on driver management and ensuring optimum use of the fleet whilst maintaining all areas of compliance. Ability to engage, motivate and encourage team members to ensure they reach their full potential.
Key tasks:
· Lead and inspire a large team - You’ll manage a large team of drivers and transport office staff. You’ll set the tone for a positive, collaborative working environment where everyone feels supported and motivated to do their best.
· Own the daily transport operation - From planning and resourcing to execution and problem-solving, you’ll oversee all aspects of the transport function. You’ll ensure that collections/deliveries are made on time, vehicles are utilised efficiently, and any issues are resolved quickly and effectively.
· Utilise Transport Management Systems (TMS) – You’ll use transport management systems, primarily TOPS to plan routes, monitor performance, track compliance, and optimise efficiency across the operation.
· Drive performance through data - You’ll produce and present detailed KPIs and performance reports, using insights to drive improvements in efficiency, cost control, and service quality. You’ll also set clear targets for your team and track progress regularly.
· Champion Health, Safety & Compliance - You’ll take a proactive approach to health and safety, conducting audits, creating risk assessments, and ensuring all legal and company standards are met.
· Manage and maintain the Fleet - Working closely with the Fleet Manager, you’ll ensure that all vehicles are roadworthy, compliant, and available when needed. You’ll also support drivers with vehicle checks and ensure any issues are addressed promptly.
· Develop and support your team - You’ll hold regular 1-2-1s, performance reviews, and development conversations with your direct reports. You’ll also deliver training sessions on key topics like vehicle checks, company processes, and CPC updates.
· Run effective meetings and debriefs - You’ll lead regular meetings with the transport team to review performance, share updates, and align on priorities. You’ll also conduct meaningful driver debriefs and gate checks to ensure accountability and legal compliance.
· Support strategic Goals - You’ll work closely with the Transport Operations Manager to support both local and wider business objectives. You’ll contribute ideas, lead initiatives, and help shape the future of the operation.
· Staff – You will be responsible for recruitment and management of resource. You’ll ensure holidays, shift patterns, weekend and on call cover is arranged.
Required Experience:
· Qualifications: Transport Manager CPC is essential and have previous Transport Management experience.
· Transport Management Systems (TMS): Experience using, ideally TOPS, but experience with any TMS is valuable.
· Legal Compliance: Strong understanding of legal compliance, driver’s hours, and WTDs.
· Change Management: Proven track record of leading successful change.
· Customer Relationship Management: Experience in managing customer relationships.
· Financial Management: Experience in managing financial budgets and annual P&L responsibility.
· Management Skills: Strong evidence of management skills and making key business decisions.
· Team Motivation: Ability to advise and motivate the team to deliver results.
· Presentation Skills: Ability to present to senior team members.
· Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Stakeholder Engagement: Strong stakeholder engagement skills.
· IT Skills: Proficient in MS Office with strong analytical abilities for reviewing data and reports.

· Hours: 08:00hrs – 17:00hrs, Monday to Friday. Saturday morning working on rotation. Flexibility to be available out of hours in the event of an incident will be expected.
