Full job description

We are looking for a dynamic and creative individual to lead the management of our existing 16+ semi-independent living accommodation and to develop our independent living offer across the charity.

The Roots Foundation Wales was established in 2011 when a number of dedicated volunteers founded the centre in order to address gaps in provision for care-experienced children and young people. Since then Roots has become a registered charity and grown from strength to strength. In 2017 BBC Children in Need DIY SOS rebuilt ‘The Hut’ and turned it into a modern, state of the art youth centre and independent living accommodation provision. A new property offering a significant increase in our accommodation will come online later this year.

Location: Based in the Ravenhill area of Swansea.

Salary/ Rate of pay: £34-37K per annum, depending on experience.

Hours and duration: 37.5 hours per week.

Management: You will report to the Director. You will have line-management responsibility for a group of workers who cover the centre overnight and on weekends.

Role and responsibilities:

To oversee and manage the Independent Living Skills programme at The Roots Foundation Wales

To lead on the management of our supported accommodation, including: liaising with commissioners; processing referrals; making all necessary practical arrangements to welcome young people into the accommodation; safeguarding, health and safety and accommodation maintenance

To ensure the centre is compliant with the terms of the Swansea Council ‘Framework Agreement for Young Person Housing Related Support’

To ensure all contractual paperwork is completed with residents and with commissioners

To ensure the Finance Officer has the information necessary to be able to secure payment from commissioners

To act as the main point of contact for all matters relating to accommodation and independent living

To work alongside our young people, supporting them to be heard and to build on their strengths in order that they may develop their independent living skills while they are living at the centre

To ensure residents fully understand and comply with the rules of the centre

To follow and adhere to all policies including Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, including maintaining accurate records

To follow and adhere to the policies and procedures related to data protection create and maintain accurate records

To undertake training relevant to the post

To contribute to the development of Roots, highlighting any shortfalls in service provision and working collaboratively with others to provide innovative service solutions

To check accommodation regularly and arrange any necessary repairs/maintenance as appropriate

Be prepared to cover evening and weekend shifts when needed

Person specification (all criteria essential unless otherwise stated):

Qualifications:

Level 3 qualification Health and Social Care or equivalent

Level 5 Management qualification (desirable)

Experience:

At least 5 years experience of direct work with care experienced children and young people

At least 2 years experience of supervising staff in a children’s services context

Experience of supporting children and young people within residential settings

Experience in funding applications and securing funding and complying with funding requirements.

Experience of working positively with other relevant agencies in a positive multi-agency approach

Knowledge:

In depth understanding of all aspects of safeguarding and data protection

Extensive knowledge of the issues that young people in care and those leaving care face on a daily basis

An understanding of the range of issues related to vulnerable children and young people, including CSE, CCE

An understanding of the importance of a trauma informed approach when working with care experienced children and young people

An understanding of NEET (Not in Education, Employment and Training) agenda as it applies to care experienced young people and of provisions to address this (desirable)

Skills:

Ability to influence commissioners and other stakeholders

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of team

Ability to demonstrate and teach independent living skills

Approachable and empathetic

Highly organised, motivated and flexible

The ability to complete risk assessments, health and safety checks and relevant DBS/CRB checks.

Additional Information

Normal Hours of work will be between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, however, some evenings and weekend work may be required.
