Pastoral Support Assistant and DDSL
SCP A5, £25,583 per annum, pro-rated
Contract Term: Full time, term time only (39 weeks)
At Berkeley Green UTC, we don’t just support students, we safeguard, nurture, and empower them to thrive both in education and beyond.
We are seeking an exceptional Pastoral Support Assistant and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead who believes, deeply and unwaveringly, that strong pastoral care and vigilant safeguarding are at the heart of transformational education. This is a unique opportunity to work in a setting where relationships matter, where students are known as individuals, and where every adult plays a vital role in keeping them safe, supported, and successful.
Why this role matters
Our students arrive with ambition, but for some, success depends on the strength of the support around them. They need a trusted adult who will listen, act, and advocate, ensuring that their wellbeing is prioritised and that barriers are addressed quickly and effectively.
You won’t simply provide pastoral support; you will:
- Act as a key safeguarding presence within the UTC, supporting and deputising for the DSL
- Respond to concerns with professionalism, care, and a clear understanding of procedures
- Build trusted relationships with students, enabling them to feel safe, heard, and supported
- Work closely with families, staff, and external agencies to secure the best outcomes
- Deliver targeted interventions to strengthen emotional wellbeing, resilience, and self-regulation
What makes Berkeley Green UTC different
Step into our UTC and you’ll feel it instantly – a culture built on professionalism, respect, and genuine human connection.
- Students are polite, motivated, and purposeful
- Staff know every learner, because relationships matter here
- Learning is cutting-edge, employer-informed, and future-focused
- Facilities are state-of-the-art, designed with industry partners
- Education is both academic and technical, equally valued
This is a place where you can truly immerse yourself in your subject, supported by colleagues who are experts in their fields and a community that believes in what education can be.
The person we are looking for
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to safeguarding and child protection
- Can confidently manage and respond to safeguarding concerns, following procedures with precision
- Builds positive, trusting relationships with students, particularly those who may be vulnerable
- Communicates effectively with staff, families, and external professionals
- Is highly organised and able to maintain accurate, detailed safeguarding records
- Can remain calm, professional, and solution-focused in complex or sensitive situations
- Works proactively as part of a team, sharing information and supporting colleagues
- Has the confidence to challenge where necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students
- Is reflective, resilient, and committed to continuous professional development
Above all, we are looking for someone who understands that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, takes pride in supporting young people through both challenge and success, and is committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and able to flourish.
