Applications are invited for a Research Assistant position to join the functional lung MRI research programme in the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCL. The post is funded by a Career Development Award Fellowship from the Medical Research Council and focuses on developing next-generation proton MRI methods to identify and track chronic lung disease (CLD).
This project aims to develop safe, practical, and clinically translatable functional lung MRI methods for direct application in patients with chronic lung disease. The research is conducted through a multidisciplinary collaboration involving national and international academic institutions, industry partners, and patient representatives from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The successful candidate will join Dr. Mina Kim’s research group and work closely with clinicians, physicists, engineers, and data scientists. The role offers hands-on training in MRI physics, respiratory physiology, and advanced computational analysis.
The postholder will contribute to developing advanced 3T MRI protocols, image analysis pipelines, and quantitative imaging biomarkers, and to preparing research outputs for publication and presentation. This position is funded for 12 months.
- This is a fixed-term role until 02/07/2027.
- Appointment at Grade 6B ( £39,148 per annum including London Allowance)
- This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 80% on site.
- The earliest start date for this role is 03/08/2026.
The successful candidate will have a completed MSc, or be close to obtaining an MSc, in imaging physics, medical physics, biomedical engineering, MRI, or a related imaging field. Applicants should have experience in dynamic functional lung MRI post-processing and quantitative image analysis, as well as in machine learning-based lung image segmentation. Experience in scientific programming using MATLAB, Python, or another widely used high-level programming language is essential, as is experience in developing and implementing image analysis or computational tools for medical imaging applications. Evidence of applying scientific methodology to research problems through peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations at scientific conferences is desirable.
The postholder should demonstrate strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to devise innovative solutions to real-world research challenges. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, including the ability to present complex scientific information effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines accurately, and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in response to changing research needs.
