Job brief
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Histopathology Technician to join our laboratory team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures essential for molecular and genetic testing. This role involves preparing tissue samples, conducting tests, and ensuring accurate and timely results to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Key Responsibilities:
Sample Preparation and Processing:
- Receive and log tissue specimens.
- Perform fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining of tissue samples.
- Ensure proper labelling and documentation of samples.
Molecular and Genetic Testing:
- Conduct DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing, and other molecular assays.
- Utilise specialised equipment for genetic testing, including next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms.
- Interpret and analyse molecular and genetic test results.
Quality Control and Assurance:
- Adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory protocols.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Participate in internal and external quality control programmes.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory procedures and results.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with consultant pathologists, biomedical scientists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Communicate findings and provide technical expertise to support clinical decisions.
- Assist in training and mentoring junior staff or new technicians.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., UKAS, HTA).
- Handle hazardous materials and specimens in accordance with safety regulations.
Qualifications:
Education:
- BSc in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, Histotechnology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
Certification:
- Registration with a professional body as a Histology Technician is preferred.
- Certification in molecular biology or genetic testing is a plus.
Experience:
- A year of experience in a histopathology laboratory.
- Experience with molecular and genetic testing techniques.
Skills and Competencies:
- Proficiency in histological techniques and molecular assays.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other relevant software.
Working Conditions:
- Laboratory environment with exposure to biological and chemical hazards.
- Requires standing, sitting, and handling of specimens for extended periods.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
