Job Summary:
IC Publications is seeking an experienced Managing Editor for the newly revamped digital-first platform of New African to oversee content production, maintain editorial standards, and help grow audience engagement. New African is an online panafrican media covering politics, business, ideas, culture, technology, and current affairs with a print edition published twice a year. We publish timely reporting, sharp analysis, opinion pieces, interviews that reflect the dynamism, complexity and global relevance of Africa today. New African has earned a reputation as a steadfast and unapologetic champion of African interests, unafraid to challenge conventional thinking and long-held misconceptions about the continent. In doing so, it has helped restore pride, shape perspectives, and amplify a confident African voice on the global stage.The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping an editorial voice that highlights African excellence, champions innovative thinking, amplifies African perspectives, and contributes to redefining how Africa is understood on the global stage.
Responsibilities:
● Alongside the editor-in-chief, set the editorial scope and tone.
● Interact on a quarterly basis with the editorial advisory board
● Commission, edit and publish articles, analyses, opinion pieces, features, and multimedia content.
● Monitor news developments, debates, and emerging trends across Africa and the diaspora.
● Help shape a forward-looking editorial agenda that promotes diverse African perspectives and solutions to global challenges.
● Identify and commission stories that spotlight African innovation and thought leadership.
● Manage daily publishing schedules and coordinate with writers, contributors, and sub-editors.
● Ensure editorial consistency, quality, accuracy, and adherence to New African’s editorial standards.
● Review facts, sources, and legal considerations before publication.
● Work closely with the Head of Digital Content to produce multimedia, interactive, and audience-focused journalism aligned with the publication’s editorial vision.
● Collaborate with design, marketing and social media teams to maximise content reach.
● In cooperation with the digital marketing team, analyse website traffic and reader engagement metrics to better understand audiences and improve editorial strategy.
● Support the development of a dynamic digital newsroom culture rooted in curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and editorial integrity.
● Perform other related duties as required.
Skills, aptitudes, attitudes and abilities:
● Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
● Ability to write compelling headlines, summaries and captions that drive engagement.
● Strong understanding of digital journalism, audience behaviour, and online publishing workflows.
● Experience optimizing articles for SEO, GEO, readability, and audience engagement.
● Multimedia sensibility with an understanding of video, audio and visual storytelling.
● Strong editorial judgment and the ability to balance speed with accuracy and nuance.
● Ability to manage multiple stories and deadlines in a fast-paced digital news environment.
● Strong understanding of global affairs and Africa’s political, economic, cultural, and social landscape
● Passion for amplifying African perspectives and showcasing African excellence, leadership and innovation
● Ability to identify emerging conversations, influential voices, and underreported stories shaping Africa’s future.

Qualifications and Experience:
● Master's degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, English, History, Politics, or a related field.
● 7+ years of editorial experience in journalism, publishing and/ or online news.
● Experience managing contributors, freelancers, or editorial teams.
● Strong knowledge of news writing, opinion editing, and online publishing workflows.
● Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
● Experience covering politics, culture, or current affairs in Africa.
● Understanding of online publishing and familiarity with CMS platforms such as WordPress or Drupal.
● Knowledge of analytics tools such as Google Analytics.
● Multimedia editing skills (video, audio, or graphics) are a plus.
