Biteback is Britain’s leading publisher of political and current affairs titles, with our wider list including history, espionage, sport, memoir and general non-fiction. We’re seeking a dynamic Editor to join our team on a permanent basis.
Reporting to the Editorial and Production Manager, the newest member of our team will be involved in steering books through all stages of the editorial process, from original manuscript to print-ready files, and ensuring our authors receive an attentive, bespoke service.
If you’re an efficient, enthusiastic, eagle-eyed editor with good initiative and impeccable attention to detail, we’d love to hear from you.
The role will include:
- Copy-editing non-fiction manuscripts swiftly and accurately
- Providing thoughtful, responsive author care
- Proofreading sales materials
- Writing compelling cover copy
- Clearing image permissions
- Liaising with freelance typesetters, proofreaders, indexers and cover designers
- Inputting text corrections using InDesign
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Solid copy-editing experience, ideally gained within a non-fiction book publisher
- First-class knowledge of language and grammar
- Excellent proofreading and attention to detail
- Knowledge of the book production process
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to juggle competing priorities
- The ability to work accurately under pressure and to deadlines
- Good communication skills, with some experience of liaising with authors
- An interest in politics and current affairs
Familiarity with Adobe InDesign software will be an advantage, as will an interest in sport.
Please note that this is not an entry-level position. This would be a terrific second or third job for either an experienced Assistant Editor ready to take the next step up or an established Editor looking to branch out in a new direction.
Location: London, working three days a week in our Westminster office and two days a week from home (or fully office-based if preferred)
Closing date: 22 June 2026
How to apply: Send a CV and covering letter detailing your suitability for the role, and including current salary and notice period, addressed to Catriona Allon at [email protected]
