About Safran Actuation Systems UK

Safran Actuation Systems UK is a world class centre for the design, manufacture and support of actuation and flight control solutions used across commercial, military and rotary platforms. With major sites in Wolverhampton and Banbury, our teams play a critical role in delivering innovative, reliable and safe systems that keep aircraft performing at their best.

The Senior Stress Engineer will be responsible for performing preliminary and detailed structural analysis to support the design and development phase for a range of actuation systems, including hydraulic, geared, mechanical, and electro-mechanical actuators, along with associated subsystems. This responsibility spans the entire product lifecycle, from conceptualization and design to prototyping, manufacturing, integration, and verification testing, through production support.

You will be expected to support stress activities using both classical and computational methods, adhering to the highest level of integrity. Additionally, you will collaborate across multifunctional teams and interface with internal and external customers throughout all phases of design, integration, testing, and production.

What will your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

Conduct preliminary sizing analysis and provide conceptual design support for actuation systems.
Utilize expertise in working with a variety of components including hydraulic actuators, hydraulic valve blocks, gearboxes, ballscrew actuators, etc.
Perform comprehensive classical and computational analysis, encompassing:
Analysis of mechanical elements such as gears, gearboxes, splines, threads, lead/ball-screws, and bearings.
Evaluation of stress, strain, fatigue, and failure modes to ensure structural integrity.
Generate detailed technical reports for internal and external stakeholders, providing insights and recommendations.
Prepare and deliver technical summaries to both internal teams and external clients, facilitating effective communication of analysis results and project updates.
Provide valuable support throughout the design, development, and maturation phases of new and existing products, contributing to the enhancement of product performance and reliability.
Offer assistance in resolving production issues by identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions, ensuring smooth production processes and product quality.

Job Requirements

Essential skills:

Strong understanding of classical stress analysis methods.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of effectively communicating with diverse audiences.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills in structural analysis environments, including experience in investigating complex failure investigations.

Desirable skills:

Detailed understanding of structural FEA, encompassing linear, contact, and dynamic analysis, vibration analysis, and non-linear materials/plasticity analysis.
Ability to derive margins of safety and damages with a high level of confidence.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, capable of effectively communicating with diverse audiences.
Good customer-facing skills, facilitating effective interaction with clients.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to collective success.
High motivation and a track record of achieving world-class results within limited time frames.
Agility in quickly assessing and adapting priorities to meet business needs.
Capability to work autonomously, maintain composure under pressure, and adapt to changes.
Operates with the highest level of personal integrity, ensuring ethical conduct in all endeavours.
Structured and organized approach, proficient in planning, reporting, and communication.
Strong organizational and time management skills, with keen attention to detail.
Flexibility and availability to address daily issues as they arise.
