QE Facilities (QEF)
We are seeking to recruit a motivated and reliable General Porter to join our Portering Services team at QE Hospital, Gateshead.
You will play a vital role as part of our Healthcare Facilities Support Team, delivering a professional, efficient, and customer-focused portering service. This role involves supporting patient care, staff requirements, and wider facilities operations across the hospital site.
Working under the direction of the Portering Management Team, you will utilise allocated equipment and resources to ensure services are delivered safely, effectively, and in line with QEF policies and procedures.
Safely transport patients, under the direction of clinical staff, including their belongings, medical records, and medications
Provide a collection and delivery service for mail, parcels, pharmacy items, and supplies (internal and external)
Transport and manage medical devices, including loan library items
Handle the collection, distribution, and storage of Equipment
Move furniture and equipment as directed by Chargehands
Assist in emergency situations including urgent specimen/blood transfers, fire procedures, and major incidents
Manage the distribution and storage of medical gases
Transport food regeneration trolleys and catering items to and from wards and departments
Carry out duties associated with the mortuary (including out-of-hours responsibilities) with appropriate record keeping
Maintain high standards of professionalism, always demonstrating a courteous, helpful, and patient-focused approach
Provide general assistance to staff, patients, and visitors across the hospital
QE Facilities (QEF) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (GHNT) .
We deliver a wide range of non-clinical support services including estates, facilities management, procurement, transport, pharmacy, and medical engineering services.

Essential Criteria
Willingness to undertake relevant training
Experience in a customer-focused role (ideally within healthcare or security)
Strong interpersonal skills with a caring and professional approach to patients and colleagues
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Good organisational and time management skills with attention to detail
Ability to follow instructions and respond to changing priorities
Desirable Criteria
Full UK Driving Licence
Basic understanding of Maths and English
Basic understanding of Mobile devices
Knowledge of health and safety practices, including infection prevention, manual handling, and safe working procedures
