Classroom Cover Practitioner - Fortitude School

Fortitude School is a specialist independent school supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, autism and communication differences. We provide a nurturing, relational and trauma-informed environment where children are supported to rebuild confidence, develop independence and develop a love of learning. We are looking to appoint a dedicated and adaptable Classroom Cover Practitioner to join our growing team.
About the Role
This is a varied and rewarding role combining classroom support with teacher cover responsibilities. The successful candidate will work across the school, supporting pupils in class and stepping into classes to cover teaching staff when they are absent due to illness, training, meetings or other commitments. Whilst our pupils are primary-aged, many present with significant developmental, communication and learning gaps.
As a result, our curriculum often combines elements of EYFS and Key Stage 1 approaches, regardless of a child's chronological age. Experience within EYFS is therefore highly desirable. This role would suit somebody who is confident leading learning activities, enjoys building strong relationships with children and is able to remain calm, positive and nurturing in a fast-paced specialist environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Support teaching and learning across the school.
- Deliver lessons and activities planned by teachers.
- Cover classes when teaching staff are absent.
- Lead small-group and whole-class learning sessions.
- Support children with emotional regulation, communication and social development.
- Adapt activities to meet individual needs.
- Promote positive behaviour through relational and trauma-informed approaches.
- Support children during outdoor learning, farm activities and enrichment opportunities.
- Work closely with teachers, support staff and families.
- Help maintain a safe, engaging and nurturing learning environment.
We Are Looking For Someone Who:
- Has experience working with children within EYFS, Primary SEND settings.
- Is confident leading groups of children independently.
- Can quickly build positive relationships with children.
- Is calm, patient and resilient.
- Understands that behaviour is communication.
- Can maintain high expectations whilst remaining nurturing and compassionate.
- Is flexible and able to adapt to changing situations.
- Has a good sense of humour and enjoys working as part of a team.
- Demonstrates genuine Fortitude when supporting children through challenges.

- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs.
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
- Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
- Trauma-informed practice.

Pay: £22,000.00-£30,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
