Full job description

About the opportunity

We are recruiting on a confidential basis for a growing UK retail business. The company operates a network of customer-facing sites supported by a small central head office, and is in an active phase of expansion, with further openings planned over the coming months.

This is a standalone, hands-on HR leadership role: you will own the people function end to end, from the operational day-to-day through to the policies and structures the business needs to scale. It will suit someone who is comfortable being both the strategic voice at leadership level and the person who writes the contract, runs the investigation and picks up the phone to a site manager.

What you will be responsible for

Owning the full employee lifecycle across head office and the site network — recruitment, onboarding, probation, development, exit
Leading the staffing plans for new site openings: workforce planning, recruitment timelines, induction and training of new teams
Acting as the point of reference on UK employment law — contracts, right-to-work checks, family leave, working time, and all statutory obligations
Managing employee relations cases end to end: disciplinaries, grievances, absence management, performance issues, settlement discussions
Writing, updating and embedding HR policies, the employee handbook and the associated management guidance
Partnering with site managers to raise people-management standards: coaching, performance frameworks, retention and succession
Overseeing payroll inputs, benefits administration and HR data, in liaison with finance and external providers
Ensuring vetting, security and compliance standards are consistently applied at recruitment and throughout employment
Reporting people KPIs (headcount, turnover, time-to-hire, absence) to the leadership team and turning them into action

What we are looking for

Substantial HR generalist experience, including at least [3] years at HR Manager / Head of HR / HR Director level
Multi-site experience, ideally in retail, hospitality or another customer-facing network
Strong, current, practical knowledge of UK employment law and ER casework — you have run cases yourself, not supervised someone who did
CIPD Level 5 or 7 (or equivalent experience) — desirable
Track record of building HR foundations in a lean or fast-growing structure rather than inheriting a mature function
Credible with a leadership team and equally credible on a shop floor
Discreet, resilient, and comfortable with the confidentiality a small senior team requires
Willing to travel regularly to sites across the UK
Right to work in the UK
