Senior Lighthouse Maintenance Engineer - Civil
Permanent
Harwich
£44,406.00 - 49,394.00 per annum(Successful candidates will be appointed on the starting salary of this range)
37 hours per week

Trinity House works for the benefit and safety of all mariners as a General Lighthouse Authority and maritime charity. Our people are central to our reputation as a leading maritime organisation, as is our commitment as an employer to developing the skills, capabilities and potential of our workforce.

The role is suited to estates, building or civil maintenance professionals and does not necessarily require chartered or graduate engineer status. We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our Field Operations team. Based in Harwich, Essex, the role involves working predominantly across the East and South Coast of England and Gibraltar, with occasional travel to Wales, Cornwall, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Scilly and other UK coastal locations.
This is a rare opportunity to help maintain 21 historic lighthouses and their associated cottages and outbuildings and many in some of the UK’s most awe-inspiring and remote coastal environments. You will play a key role in preserving nationally significant heritage assets while supporting the UK’s vital maritime Aids to Navigation. The working environments can vary from land-based installations to those that are offshore, with modes of transport for access ranging from van/car, ships or helicopter.
Given the locations of the stations, you could be spending significant time away from home. This, coupled with the physical nature of the duties involved, calls for appropriate levels of health and fitness.
What will you do
You will lead the ongoing maintenance of the lighthouses and their associated properties. Working closely with the Technical Manager and the Building Services team, you will ensure the estate is maintained to the highest technical, safety and heritage standards.
This is a hands-on asset management role requiring experience of managing small to medium contracts with autonomy, sound judgement and a strong understanding of construction and compliance obligations.
Key Responsibilities

prepare technical specifications and work with our Procurement Team to procure best-value civil maintenance contracts.
Assess and appoint technically suitable contractors for civil works.
Undertake the duties of Client under CDM Regulations and ensure full CDM compliance.
Work with our Estates and Property Management Team to ensure all necessary planning permissions and listed building consents have been obtained prior to works.
Manage contractors on site, ensuring works are delivered safely, to specification and to agreed quality standards.
Monitor works and maintain accurate records within the appropriate management information systems (MMIS).
Work collaboratively with the Building Services team to maintain estate asset data and engineering standards.

What are we looking for
You will be an experienced building maintenance professional who is confident working independently and managing contractors across multiple sites.
Skills & Experience

Proven experience in building / estates maintenance and contractor management.
Experience preparing specifications and tender documentation.
Strong understanding of HSE requirements within construction, particularly CDM Regulations.
Experience working with maintenance management information systems.
Ability to manage work across geographically dispersed and occasionally remote locations.
Knowledge of heritage or listed buildings (desirable).

Qualifications

Level 4 qualification (or equivalent experience) in a Civil Engineering, Building or Estate Management discipline
Full UK driving licence.
