VAT Manager
We are seeking an experienced and motivated VAT Manager to join our long-established family firm of accountants based in York, known for our personal approach, long‑standing client relationships, and supportive working culture. This office-based role is an excellent opportunity for a VAT specialist who is looking to take ownership of a varied client portfolio while leading and developing a team.
The successful candidate will provide expert VAT advice and compliance services to a diverse range of clients, ensuring high levels of service delivery and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a portfolio of clients, providing VAT compliance and advisory services.
- Review and oversee VAT returns prepared by team members.
- Advise clients on a wide range of VAT matters, including complex transactions, property VAT, partial exemption, and international VAT issues.
- Support clients with VAT registrations, deregistrations, disclosures, and HMRC enquiries.
- Monitor changes in VAT legislation and communicate relevant developments to clients and colleagues.
- Lead, mentor, and develop junior team members, providing technical guidance and performance support.
- Review work completed by the VAT team to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Identify opportunities to add value to clients through proactive VAT planning and advisory services.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted adviser.
- Work collaboratively with other departments to provide integrated client solutions.
This is a hands‑on role where you will build genuine relationships with clients and help shape the future of the team.
Requirements
Essential
- CTA, ACA or ACCA qualified, or qualified by experience.
- Ideally 5 years' experience within an accountancy practice.
- Strong technical knowledge of UK VAT legislation and compliance requirements.
- Experience using accounting software such as Sage and Xero.
- Experience managing, mentoring, and developing a team.
- Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Commercial awareness and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Desirable
- Experience dealing with complex VAT advisory projects.
- Experience representing clients during HMRC enquiries and investigations.
