Job Purpose
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated Bank Support Typists to provide flexible typing and administrative support to the Kent Integrated Dermatology Service.
Working as part of our administration and secretarial team, you will assist in ensuring clinical correspondence and patient administration are completed accurately and efficiently. The role will primarily support the Medical Secretaries during periods of annual leave, sickness and increased service demand, whilst also providing general administrative assistance where required.
The successful candidate will have excellent typing and organisational skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently whilst maintaining the highest standards of patient confidentiality.
About the Service
Kent Integrated Dermatology Service (KIDS) provides NHS specialist dermatology services across Sussex, Surrey and Kent. Our multidisciplinary team includes Consultant Dermatologists, GPwSIs, Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and an experienced Administration and Secretarial team.
We are committed to delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring patients receive timely assessment and treatment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Medical Typing & Secretarial Support
- Accurately type clinic letters, medical reports, discharge summaries and test result correspondence using digital and/or audio dictation – expectation of 9 letters typed per hour.
- Produce correspondence for Consultants and GPwSI clinicians within agreed turnaround times.
- Complete secondary care and referral correspondence when required.
- Check clinical correspondence for accuracy before distribution.
- Communicate with clinicians regarding any discrepancies or queries within dictated correspondence.
- Prioritise urgent and suspected cancer pathway correspondence appropriately.
- Update electronic patient records with completed correspondence.
Administrative Support
- Book, amend and cancel patient appointments.
- Respond to patient email enquiries in a timely manner.
- Update patient records following telephone or email contact.
- Scan, upload, file and securely manage clinical documentation.
- Process and code histopathology and blood results following service procedures.
- Write and distribute patient results letters.
- Investigate outstanding queries, reports and clinical results.
- Monitor and action shared secretarial inboxes.
- Liaise with Consultants, GPwSIs, nursing staff, hospitals, GP surgeries and colleagues across multiple sites.
- Provide general administrative support to the wider service as required.
Planning and Organisation
- Organise and prioritise your workload effectively.
- Work flexibly across administrative and secretarial functions depending on service needs.
- Meet service deadlines whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Work independently whilst contributing positively to the wider team.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of patient information at all times.
Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Excellent typing skills with a high level of accuracy.
- Previous administration or secretarial experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Professional and courteous telephone manner.
- Understanding of confidentiality and data protection requirements.
Desirable
- Previous Medical Secretary or NHS administration experience.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Experience using SystmOne, Lexacom or similar clinical systems.
- Experience within a healthcare environment.
- Understanding of NHS referral pathways and waiting time targets.

Working Pattern
This is a Bank position with no guaranteed hours. Shifts will be offered on an as-required basis to support service demand, annual leave and sickness cover. There may be opportunities for both office-based and hybrid working following appropriate training, subject to service requirements.
Pay: £12.80 per hour
