The Department of Humanities is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to support the AHRC-funded research project ‘Beyond The Dear Green Place: The Lost Works and Literary Networks of Archie Hind’ led by Dr Eleanor Bell. Archie Hind is one of Glasgow’s most important postwar writers, and his papers, previously thought lost, are an exceptionally important recent addition to the University’s archive collections. This project will shed new light on one of Britain’s most important, yet, to date, overlooked postwar writers. Many are unaware that Hind wrote radio plays and short stories during the 1950s and 1960s or know of his plays written during the 1970s and 1980s for groups including John McGrath’s influential 7:84 Theatre Company. This AHRC-funded project will therefore provide a full assessment of Hind’s complete literary output not previously thought possible.

As a Research Assistant, you will assist in the delivery of the research activities as part of a small, interdisciplinary team, working under the general supervision of Dr Eleanor Bell. You will help to collate materials for a volume of the uncollected works of Archie Hind (including plays, correspondence and short stories), contribute to the development of archival resources, and play a key role in public engagement events, thereby strengthening your own academic profile and professional skillset. You will manage and prioritise your own workload and ensure that all activities are completed to deadline and you will write up the results of your own research and contribute to the production of research reports and publications. You will input as a team member to administrative activities and assist, where required, with relevant knowledge exchange activities.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of Degree level in a relevant Humanities subject and you will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in postwar Scottish Literature and/or Scottish Theatre. You will have knowledge of appropriate research methods, have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, with general supervision, and you will have an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: a higher Degree in a relevant discipline, some relevant work experience, membership/working towards membership of a relevant Chartered/professional body (including the Higher Education Academy), and experience of knowledge exchange related activities.
