The Role
We are seeking an exceptionally experienced Specialist SEN Tutor to support a Year 1 learner with profound physical and complex medical needs as part of an EOTAS package.
This is a highly specialist role focused on early communication, sensory engagement and language development, rather than traditional academic teaching.
The successful tutor will work closely with family and external professionals to deliver a personalised, multi-sensory programme designed to develop communication, interaction and engagement through meaningful experiences.
Due to the complexity of this placement, we are seeking applicants with substantial experience supporting children with complex physical disabilities, medical needs and significant developmental delays.
About the Student
This young learner:
- Is working significantly below age-related expectations
- Communicates primarily through facial expressions, body movements and non-verbal vocalisations
- Is currently unable to recognise letters or numbers
- Demonstrates understanding of cause and effect
- Requires extensive adult support to access all learning experiences
- Is currently very unwell and receives significant medical support at home
He particularly enjoys:

- Watching familiar television programmes
- Interaction with trusted adults
- Cause-and-effect experiences
Essential Experience
This role requires a tutor with significant experience supporting learners with:
- Complex physical disabilities
- Complex medical needs
- Severe developmental delay
- Non-verbal communication
- Sensory-based learning
- Early communication development
- Multi-disciplinary working
Applicants should have a strong understanding of:

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver highly personalised 1:1 sessions focused on communication and engagement
- Create a multi-sensory learning environment tailored to the student's needs
- Use:
- Objects of reference
- Tactile cues
- Visual supports
- Auditory cues
- Symbol-based communication
- Recognise and respond appropriately to the student's subtle communication attempts
- Adapt all activities to the student's physical positioning and medical needs
- Liaise closely with family and external professionals
- Maintain detailed progress records and contribute to ongoing planning
Important Medical & Safeguarding Information
This is a highly specialist placement.
The student:
- Has significant physical disabilities and complex medical needs
- Has a very low immune system
- Is at high risk of serious respiratory illness
- Receives nutrition and medication through a gastrostomy
- Has limited mobility and complex postural requirements
- Requires specialist equipment to access learning
Only trained individuals may undertake any physical handling.
The tutor will not be expected to provide medical care, but must be comfortable working within a multidisciplinary environment and following established medical, safeguarding and risk-management procedures.
A responsible adult will be present throughout all sessions.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Extensive experience supporting children with complex physical and medical needs
- Experience working within EOTAS, specialist schools or complex needs settings
- Strong understanding of communication development for non-verbal learners
- Calm, patient and highly observant approach
- Ability to build strong relationships with both child and family
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain)
Desirable:
- Experience working alongside Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists or similar professionals
- Knowledge of sensory processing and specialist communication approaches
- Experience supporting learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)
Schedule
- 5 hours per week
- Monday to Friday availability
- Flexible scheduling
- Preferred session times between 11am and 1pm
- Home-based provision in Welland, Worcestershire
