About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Transport Manager to oversee and manage our UK and European transport operations specialising in flatbed, abnormal and ADR loads, The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe, legal, and efficient operation of the fleet while maintaining excellent customer service and operational performance.
This is a senior operational role requiring strong leadership, compliance knowledge, and extensive experience within the road haulage industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day transport operations across the UK and Europe.
- Oversee planning and coordination of all movements
- Ensure full compliance with UK and EU transport legislation, Operator Licence requirements, and DVSA regulations.
- Manage route planning, permits, escort arrangements, ESDAL notifications, and movement orders for abnormal loads.
- Monitor fleet utilisation, vehicle availability, maintenance schedules, and operational efficiency.
- Lead and support transport planners, drivers, and operational staff.
- Ensure compliance with driver hours, Working Time Directive, tachograph regulations, and health & safety standards.
- Maintain strong relationships with customers, ports, shipping agents, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities.
- Handle operational challenges including route restrictions, delays, ferry bookings, customs requirements, and breakdowns.
- Monitor transport costs, fuel usage, subcontractor spend, and departmental budgets.
- Conduct driver inductions, disciplinary procedures, and performance management where required.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across fleet operations and compliance processes.
- Ensure all transport documentation, permits, and records are accurately maintained.
- Manage and optimise the utilisation of transportation management systems (TMS) and telematics platforms.
- Monitor profit & loss statements related to transportation operations, identifying areas for cost reduction and revenue enhancement.
- Ensure adherence to safety regulations and maintain high standards of workplace safety during all transport activities.
- Lead initiatives for continuous improvement in all transport activities
Experience
- Proven supervisory experience within transportation or logistics management roles.
- Hands-on experience with transportation management systems (TMS)
- Strong understanding of profit & loss analysis related to transportation activities.
- Proven experience as a Transport Manager within UK and European haulage operations.
- Strong background in planning flat bed trailer and abnormal load movements
- Understanding of STGO regulations
- International transport planning experience including ferry operations and European route management.
- Strong knowledge of Operator Licence compliance and DVSA requirements.
- CPC National and/or International qualification
- Experience managing drivers and transport office teams.
- Strong commercial awareness and cost-control abilities.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced logistics environment.
Desirable Experience
- Knowledge of customs procedures
- Experience of the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS).
