Full job description

Job title: Support Officer

Reporting to: Projects Coordinator

Salary: £28,119 per annum

Hours: 35 hours per week

Location: London Borough of Barnet

This role will provide intensive support to people moving from the street into accommodation.

Aims for the Role

· To support people to move into accommodation.

· To deliver person centred work; understanding the problems of resettlement for people who have previously been rough sleeping, basing decisions and developing a plan which prioritises their goals and priorities

· Support people to access specialist services and support within our Day Centre and beyond.

Financial and supervisory responsibility

· Support of volunteers may be required acting as peer mentors within the project.

· Working within agreed budgets.

Other key details

· A significant degree of flexibility is required in delivering the service to meet clients’ needs; some evening work may be required occasionally and time off in lieu will be given in accordance with HAB’s TOIL policy, where work is delivered outside of the agreed working pattern.

· You must be willing to undertake any training that is needed.

· A satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required for this role.

Job responsibilities

· Provide person centred support to help people who need help to be housed sustainably.

· Provide support which works with the person, identifying goals and milestones that they want to achieve and working with them to establish the relevant links in the community that will help them

· Conduct initial assessments and ongoing reviews of clients’ needs, options and opportunities (housing, health, training, employment etc.), looking to develop relationships which help them meet their goals

· Use a coaching methodology to support clients to address their wider support needs such as decision-making, well-being and learning

· Identify and develop good working relationships with statutory and other organisations which enable the client to achieve their goals within the community

· Signpost clients to relevant support services either within HAB or delivered by external agencies and organisations. If necessary - to undertake advocacy on behalf of clients to enable them to access external provision.

· Work towards agreed goals with the client in areas such as employment, further education, improved housing, social networks, health and wellbeing

· Liaise with Tenancy Sustainment Officer as clients move on.

Monitoring and Evaluation

· Fully engage with the monitoring and evaluation process by collecting the relevant information, updating records on the client database and liaising with other relevant staff to avoid duplication & maintain safety.

· Ensure that clients’ feedback is recorded and where appropriate, acted upon, including supporting clients seeking to make a complaint through the formal complaints process

Contribution to the team

· Promote HAB and the benefits of engagement and learning to a variety of audiences including potential members, volunteers, funders, other service providers, statutory agencies and the local community

· Contribute to the continuing development of the service by contributing ideas for activity and service innovations

· Encourage and support client involvement within HAB and ensure the successful delivery of all relevant aspects of the client involvement strategy, such as client forums

· Ensure that any safeguarding concerns are identified and reported in line with HAB’s procedures

General responsibilities

· Develop an understanding of homelessness and HAB’s aims

· Follow HAB policies and procedures, including health and safety

· Carry out other reasonable duties that may be required

Person Specification

1 Experience of delivering at least one of the following:

· person centred support,

· offering coaching and mentoring,

· learning support and/or personal development training

· empowering people to change

· other similar types of support (E)

2 Some knowledge of the issues affecting homeless people and an ability to describe some of these issue (E)

3 Ability to review and appraise the development of clients and use this information to develop learning/progression plans (E)

4 Experience of drawing up individual support or leaning plans. (E)

5 Experience of advocating for other people in different situations (D)

6 Experience of conflict situations and an understanding of how to de-escalate/manage such situations (E)

7 Good time management and the ability to prioritise tasks (E)

8 A strong team player. (E)

9 Experience of reflective practice (D)

10 Proficient in using Microsoft Office (E)

11 Experience and knowledge of safeguarding or a commitment to learn and demonstrate understanding within 3 months of appointment (E)

12 Able to demonstrate a commitment to the values of equality and social inclusion that match HAB’s purpose and values (see website) (E)
