About us

Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking significant research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio that addresses all areas of biology, from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies, and the environment. Much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the planet's health. Activity is underpinned by high-calibre science technology platforms and state-of-the-art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the research group of Professor Jürg Bähler as a Postdoctoral Researcher. We investigate the roles of conserved but unknown genes during cellular quiescence and ageing using fission yeast and turquoise killifish as model systems. We apply diverse genetic/genomic, cell biology, molecular/biochemical, and computational approaches to analyse gene function and cellular regulation, complex ageing-associated processes, and the relationships between the genotype, phenotype, and environment. About the role

You will make independent and original contributions to the completion of a research project investigating transcriptome patterns in diapause embryos of killifish. You will apply experimental and various computational approaches to examine the expression of RNAs at both bulk and single-cell levels in developing and dormant embryos under different conditions. You will disseminate these findings as scientific papers, via community resources, through interaction with experts, and in presentations.

The appointment will be for one year. Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £38,357 - £41,005 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. About you

You are curious, open-minded, and highly motivated to finish our ongoing research project on transcriptome expression signatures in killifish diapause embryos. You have a PhD degree (or PhD submission planned at the time of application) and substantial expertise in research skills relevant to our project, most notably in working with killifish embryos and in generating and analysing transcriptomic data, including single-cell RNA-seq and the associated computational and statistical methods.
