Department: Facilities & Operations | Reports to: Facilities Lead | Role type: Voluntary, unpaid
Help keep Maine Road FC playing every week
Maine Road FC is looking for 2 additional Groundsperson to take care of the playing surface that everything else at the club depends on. We're a community football club with a proud history going back to 1955, fielding three teams across a busy season — and none of it happens without a pitch that's marked, mown, and ready to go on a Saturday morning.
If you take pride in practical work, enjoy being outdoors, and like the satisfaction of stepping back at kick-off and knowing the pitch looks the part, this is a role where your work is visible every single home game.
About the role
The Groundsperson is responsible for preparing and maintaining the Maine Road FC playing pitch and surrounding areas, making sure the grounds are safe and playable for every fixture. You'll work closely with the Facilities Lead on bigger jobs, and liaise with referees on matchdays about pitch readiness.
What you'll be doing
- Marking out the pitch for all home fixtures in line with FA regulations
- Maintaining the pitch surface across the season — mowing, aeration, overseeding, and general upkeep
- Maintaining the football pitch surrounding grounds, mowing, strimming etc.
- Inspecting the pitch before each home fixture and liaising with the referee on playability
- Looking after pitch equipment including mowers, line markers, and corner flags
- Setting up match day equipment and fan zone etc.
- Setting up and marking the technical area and dugouts correctly
- Carrying out remedial work after fixtures to keep the surface in good shape
- Coordinating with the Facilities Lead on any bigger groundworks or improvements
What we're looking for
- Experience in grounds maintenance is desirable, but a willingness to learn and a practical, hands-on attitude count for a lot
- Physical fitness — this is outdoor work, in all weathers, often early in the morning
- Familiarity with grounds maintenance equipment, or confidence in picking it up
- Access to your own grounds maintenance equipment is an advantage but not required — the club has its own kit available
- Reliable and able to plan around the home fixture list
- An eye for detail — straight lines, correct dimensions, the small things that make a pitch look right
What you'll get out of it
- A practical, satisfying role where you can see the results of your work every weekend
- The chance to develop real grounds maintenance skills, with support from the Facilities Lead
- Time outdoors and a clear, well-defined patch of work that's yours
- A welcoming committee who'll back you with the kit and budget you need to do the job properly
- The quiet pride of standing pitchside before kick-off knowing it's ready because of you
The practical bits
This is a voluntary, unpaid role, like every position at Maine Road FC. The work is seasonal in shape — busier in pre-season and around fixture weeks, with quieter spells in summer (other than renovation work). Some flexibility on timing, but pitch prep needs to be done ahead of kick-off, so Saturday mornings are typically part of the rhythm.
