Location: Bedford (Hybrid – Office, Home Based and on site, with regular travel to sites expected across the UK)
Salary: circa £26,000–£32,000 per annum, depending on experience (pro-rata for part-time)
Hours: During initial 3-6 months Part-time, Mon-Wed (22.5-24 hours) increasing to Full Time, Monday to Friday (37.5–40 hours)

Job Summary
Gilfillan Murray Consulting Ltd has an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Fire Risk Assessor and Building Safety Consultant to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual seeking to build a long-term career in fire safety and building compliance consultancy.
As a Trainee Fire Risk Assessor and Building Safety Consultant, you will initially work alongside our highly experienced Principal Consultant/Director, receiving structured training, mentoring and hands-on experience. This will enable you develop practical knowledge and skills applicable across a wide range of fire safety and building compliance services. It is expected that with experience you will progress towards undertaking your own inspections, preparing reports, and managing projects under supervision. You will receive ongoing professional development, exposure to a diverse portfolio of buildings and support towards industry recognised qualifications providing a clear pathway to becoming a competent Fire Risk Assessor and Building Safety Consultant.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 Fire Risk Assessments.
- Carry out site inspections and photographic surveys.
- Assist with fire door inspections and condition surveys.
- Assist with compartmentation and passive fire protection inspections.
- Prepare draft Fire Risk Assessment reports.
- Review drawings and building information.
- Record inspection findings accurately using digital systems.
- Liaise professionally with clients, contractors and managing agents.
- Assist with Fire Safety Reviews and retrospective Fire Strategies.
- Maintain accurate project records.
- Travel throughout the UK as required.
As experience develops, responsibilities will expand to include Fire Strategies, Building Safety Case support, technical evaluations, passive fire protection inspections and broader building safety consultancy work.
Training and Development
A structured development programme will be provided, including mentoring. Training will include:
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022
- Building Regulations and Approved Document B
- Fire door inspections
- Passive fire protection
- Means of escape assessments
- Fire alarm and emergency lighting fundamentals
- Report writing and technical communication
- Building Safety Act awareness
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Support will also be provided towards recognised industry qualifications where appropriate.
Essential Requirements
- Strong interest in fire safety and the built environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High level of attention to detail
- Strong work ethic including an ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Competent with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Full UK Driving Licence and access to your own vehicle
- Willingness to travel and occasionally stay away overnight
- Ability to safely undertake the physical aspects of the role, including climbing ladders, using hand and power tools, working at height and/or from mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs), and accessing confined and/or restricted areas, in accordance with company health and safety procedures and site-specific safety requirements.
