This is a fixed term contract in accordance with the length of the apprenticeship.

The success of our vision depends on our fantastic employees and fostering the talent of the future. That is why we have this exciting opportunity for a Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician.
The primary role is to support the Motor Vehicle Technician at the Central Vehicle Maintenance Unit to carry out planned maintenance, inspection and preparation for MOT, and reactive repairs, to the Council’s vehicle fleet to a highest service standard.
To support the technician to carry out planned maintenance on the Council’s vehicles as per the relevant servicing schedule including but not exclusive to:
- LGV (Large Goods Vehicles) & Light commercial servicing; DOT inspections; Electrical, fuel system and engine fault finding and rectification
- Repairs and replacement of ancillary equipment
- Full engine strip and rebuild
- Refuse vehicle body and bin lift diagnostics; Heavy steel fabrication and welding; Light steel fabrication and welding
- Dual fuel fault diagnosis and repairs; Tyre inspection and wheel changing; Suspension, brake and steering overhaul
- To assist with the preparation of LGV and light vehicles for MOT tests and inspections.
Typically, it is expected that it will take three years for the apprentice to attain the required level of competence in the workplace and complete their apprenticeship, although it may be sooner if an individual already has significant training and practical experience.
You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
About you
You will need:
- GCSEs or equivalent – English and Maths, Grade C/4 or above is a requirement for the apprenticeship
- A full UK driving licence, or in the process of obtaining a full licence (and pass the Swindon Borough Council transport driver assessment.)
- Good people skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a range of people both orally and in writing.
- Genuine interest in Logistics and Stores Management and willingness to learn and participate in the apprenticeship.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- IT skills including the ability to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
- Good organisation and time-keeping skills
- Demonstrable ability to solve practical problems
- To be physically fit and able to undertake long and arduous physical demands which include the removal and fitment of heavy road wheels, brake drums, gearboxes, clutches and road springs etc.
