QTS SEN Home Tutor – 1:1 (Early Years/PMLD) – Salford, M7

Location: Home Tuition – Salford (M7)
Competitive Hourly Rate
5 Hours Per Week (5 x 1-hour sessions, Mon–Fri)
Start Date: TBC
Focus: Early Years Sensory & Communication Development (PMLD)

Pay: £35-£50 per hour, depending on experience and relevant training - to be confirmed

About the Role

Study Mind is seeking an experienced and compassionate qualified female SEN tutor to support a 3-year-old girl with Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), severe congenital myopathy and complex physical and communication needs, as part of an Education Other Than At School (EOTAS) placement.

This is a highly specialist early years role rather than a traditional academic tuition post. The successful tutor will deliver 1:1, home-based, sensory and play-based sessions designed to support communication, engagement and development at Hafsa's own pace, working closely alongside her existing multi-disciplinary team.

About the Student

Our student is a happy, sociable little girl who has not yet been able to attend an educational setting due to significant ill health and repeated hospital admissions. She is entirely reliant on the adults around her to bring the world to her — she cannot yet move independently to explore her environment, and communicates only through eye gaze, vocalisations, facial expression and body movement.

She is currently supported by the Portage Home Visiting Service and a wider clinical team, and is assessed as functioning significantly below her chronological age across all developmental domains. Despite this, she demonstrates real engagement and enjoyment when activities are pitched right — she can sustain attention for up to 30 minutes on a highly motivating activity, and lights up in response to music, cartoons, bubbles, textures and familiar voices.

Your Role

You will deliver engaging 1:1 home tuition, including:

Sensory exploration and play (sight, sound, touch)
Early cause-and-effect and joint attention activities
Total Communication approaches (Objects of Reference, key signing, eye-gaze, modelled language)
Intensive interaction and relationship-building
Careful positioning and handling in line with her physiotherapy/OT programme
Liaison with, and contribution to, updates for the wider care team (Portage, SALT, OT, Physiotherapy)

Sessions must begin with a warm, low-demand settling period before any structured activity, and resources must be positioned carefully within Hafsa's natural field of vision, as eye gaze is her primary means of engaging with the world.

Student Strengths & Interests

Building sessions around Hafsa's interests will be essential. She enjoys:

Music and being sung to — she moves her legs and hips in response
Watching cartoons and nursery rhymes
Being outdoors
Mirror play, high-contrast picture books, bubbles, and different textures
People interacting with her directly, and copying her babbling sounds

She is described by her family as happy and content, and enjoys having her older and younger siblings nearby.

Teaching Approach

The successful tutor will:

Prioritise relationship-building and trust before structured activity
Work at Hafsa's pace, following her lead and reading subtle non-verbal cues
Use consistent Objects of Reference and Total Communication strategies
Follow her postural management programme, including regular position changes through the session
Stay alert to signs of discomfort or distress and respond calmly and promptly
Remain closely attuned to Hafsa's medical presentation, including recognising and responding promptly to any signs of respiratory distress

We're Looking For Someone Who Has Experience With

PMLD and complex physical/medical needs
Early years SEND
Non-verbal communication approaches (Objects of Reference, key signing, intensive interaction)
Working within a multi-disciplinary care team
Sensory-based play and early developmental assessment tools (e.g. Routes for Learning)

Experience with children with significant medical complexity, or a background in early years/EYFS SEND settings, would be highly desirable.

Essential Requirements

Female tutor (essential, per family preference)
Experience supporting children with PMLD and/or complex physical/communication needs
Willingness to complete moving and handling training prior to starting
Elklan training desirable (or willingness to undertake)
Patient, warm and highly observant approach
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
Excellent safeguarding knowledge

Tuition Details

Location: Face-to-face home tuition in Salford (M7), in the family living room
Hours: 5 hours per week — 1 hour, Monday to Friday, 1:1
Preferred session times: After 11:00am (please avoid mornings before 11am)
Focus: Sensory and communication-focused early years development, delivered in line with EHCP outcomes
