An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join our friendly and well-established Children’s Nursing Team on Bluefin Ward.
Bluefin Ward provides care for children and young people from birth to 18 years, supporting a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The ward includes a High Dependency Unit (HDU) area and a dedicated Children’s and Young Person’s Day Unit, offering a dynamic and varied clinical environment.
In this Band 6 role, you will take a key leadership position within the team, coordinating the clinical area, managing shifts, and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care. You will utilise and further develop advanced nursing skills in areas such as respiratory support, fluid management, pain control, and the stabilisation of the acutely unwell or deteriorating child.

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria.

The service is committed to providing a consistently high standard of nursing care for sick children and young people up to 18 years of age within University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This includes outpatient, emergency, and elective care across the division, ensuring the effective and efficient use of resources.
As a Band 6 Nurse, you will play a key role in coordinating care delivery, supporting and supervising team members, and leading shifts within the clinical area. You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care, demonstrating advanced clinical skills and professional judgement. You will also act as a role model, contributing to staff development, education, and the ongoing improvement of patient care services.

Deliver a high standard of nursing care with a high level of autonomy, underpinned by evidence-based practice, for children and young people with a range of medical and surgical conditions.
Demonstrate advanced paediatric nursing skills, acting as a clinical role model and source of expertise for junior staff within the ward environment.
Undertake, document, and evaluate comprehensive assessments of the physical, psychological, and social needs of children and young people, developing and implementing appropriate care plans.
Lead and coordinate the ward team throughout the shift, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care delivery.
Support the care of acutely unwell and high-dependency patients, including those requiring enhanced monitoring and interventions within the HDU area.
Promote and maintain high standards of care in line with best practice, Trust policies, and national guidelines.
Supervise, support, and mentor junior nurses, students, and support staff, promoting a positive learning environment and professional development.
Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless, holistic care for patients and their families.
Contribute to the safe use, security, and maintenance of ward equipment.
Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical standards, audit activity, and quality improvement initiatives.
Act as deputy to the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in their absence, supporting the operational management of the ward.
Respond to incidents, concerns, and complaints in accordance with Trust policy, escalating appropriately to senior staff.
Communicate effectively with children, young people, and their families, adapting communication to meet individual needs, including developmental stage, culture, language, and any additional needs.
