Full job description

The Engineering Department at Otter Controls operates a matrix like structure where the successful candidate will report to the Product Support Manager who will be responsible for their workload. A portion of the successful candidate’s workload will be providing engineering support to our production sites focusing on existing products. However, the role will also be supporting a Product Architect or Lead Design Engineer as they work through their projects from concept to production.

In order to assist and help the successful candidate develop their skillset, over time they will be involved in all areas and phases of projects including, Feasibility, Specification Development, Design Confirmation, Implementation, Pre-Production and Production.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Design and Development of New Products destined for our production facilities in UK, China, India, The Netherlands and Hungary

Product Support for new and existing products including detailing design modifications to reduce costs and/or improve quality.

Optimisation of product designs to aid the manufacture, assembly and application of new and existing products. A key area of focus here is the understanding of variation within manufacture.

Construct Test Matrices on new products / concepts with the help of the Engineering Manager to: Prove new / improve existing / cost reduced products or concepts conform to the Product Design Specification and are fit for release into production.

Organise the construction and recording of tests and experiments on Otter & competitor products in a pre-planned & thorough manner.

Support for the other development team members in all technical aspects of the project.

Technical liaison with external Suppliers and Customers.

Technical liaison with internal departments, including other sites within the Otter Group.

Progress reporting – both internally and externally – at all levels

Work within the relevant Engineering Procedures & comply with the Company Rule Book

Work to New Product Introduction Project (NPIP) procedure & official safety standards (BEAB, EN, UL , CSA etc) as required.

Relevant Skills and Experience

A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. In order to be able to analyse designs, mechanisms, components and systems etc. relevant Engineering Training is required & will be given. The preferred class of degree is an upper second minimum (2:1 or better).

3D CAD –Candidates should have an appreciation of the aspects of working with CAD and the benefits that this provides. Ideally but not essential experience with using Solidworks.

Experience / appreciation of a machine shop environment, including the use of millers, lathes and other equipment with regards to how components are manufactured is also desirable.

The Otter Group has locations in the UK, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, China, India and Hungary

Nominal 38 hour week

Minimum of 33 days annual holiday – including Bank Holidays etc.

Driving Licence required

Willingness to travel when required. Successful candidates will be based at Buxton in the UK but expected to travel to other sites on occasions. As a guideline the time span on trips abroad typically one to two weeks for long haul trips. These can be extended on occasions within reasonable limits. Shorter distance travel normally involves much less time away from home – typical one or two nights up to 1 week.
