5 Days On / 4 Days Off / 4 Days On / 5 Days Off (Back-to-Back Rotation)
Based at Hemerdon Mine, ~10 miles northeast of Plymouth. No public transport to site. Own vehicle essential.
Role Overview
The Mining Site Services Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising and coordinating all site services, estate management, and groundworks activities across the mining/quarry operation. The role involves leading a small multi-skilled crew of up to 5 personnel while ensuring all works are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with statutory legislation and company standards.
The successful candidate will have strong practical experience in estate management, drainage and water management systems, basic civil works, fencing, pump installation and setup, and pipe welding. The role also requires competency operating a range of mobile plant and the ability to interpret technical drawings and site plans.
This position is a hands-on supervisory role suited to a self-motivated individual capable of working independently and developing practical site solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise and coordinate a crew of up to 5 personnel during day shift operations.
- Allocate daily work activities and ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
- Lead by example through active participation in operational and maintenance activities.
- Conduct shift briefings, inspections, and toolbox talks.
- Maintain effective communication with operational, maintenance, and management teams.
Site Services & Estate Management
- Oversee and carry out general estate management and infrastructure maintenance across site
Coordinate and undertake:
- Groundworks
- Basic civil engineering works
- Fencing installation and repairs
- Drainage systems installation and maintenance
- Water management activities
- Vegetation management
- Environmental team management support
- Support environmental controls and site housekeeping standards.
Water Management Duties
- Install, maintain pumping systems and associated pipework.
- Carry out pipe welding and repairs as required.
- Monitor and maintain water management infrastructure including lagoons, drains, settlement systems, and pumping arrangements.
- Water discharge quality management
Mobile Plant Operations
Safely operate and supervise the use of mobile plant equipment including:
- Excavators
- Back Hoe Loaders
- Tractors and implements
- Other ancillary site plant as required
Conduct daily inspections and ensure plant is operated in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Ensure full compliance with:
- Quarries Regulations 1999
- Health and Safety at Work Act
- Environmental legislation and permit conditions
- Company rules, procedures, and safe systems of work
- Conduct risk assessments, workplace inspections, and hazard reporting.
- Promote and maintain a positive safety culture.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective action implementation.
Procedures & Continuous Improvement
- Follow all site operational and maintenance procedures.
- Develop and implement new procedures and safe working practices where required.
- Identify opportunities to improve site services efficiency, environmental performance, and operational reliability.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and operational records.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience in mining, quarrying, construction, estate management, or heavy industrial environments.
- Supervisory experience managing small operational teams.
Strong practical experience in:
- Groundworks
- Basic civils
- Drainage and water management
- Fencing
- Pipe welding
- Pump setup and operation
- Competent in reading and interpreting technical drawings and site plans.
Experienced operator of:
- Excavators
- Back Hoe Loaders
- Tractors and associated implements
Strong knowledge of:
- Quarries Regulations 1999
- Health & Safety legislation
- Environmental compliance requirements
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- CPCS / NPORS / MPQC plant qualifications.
- IOSH
- First Aid qualification.
- Welding certification advantageous.
- Experience working within quarry or mining operations preferred.
