Security/Patrol Officer
We are recruiting one Security Officer to join the 24/7 security team at Herstmonceux Castle.
The role is based on a 600-acre historic estate that includes academic buildings, student accommodation, gardens, woodland, event spaces and areas open to members of the public. The estate is monitored around the clock and requires regular patrols, observation and a consistent on-site security presence.
This role requires a measured, professional approach, strong situational awareness and the ability to deal calmly and respectfully with students, staff, visitors and members of the public. As a visible presence across the estate, the Security Officer represents both the estate and the University on a daily basis.
Some shifts are quiet and routine-based; others are busier due to events or increased visitor activity. No two days are the same and flexibility and good judgement are essential.
Main purpose of the role
To provide a consistent, professional and visible security presence across the 600-acre Herstmonceux Castle Estate, safeguarding buildings, grounds and facilities while supporting the day-to-day experience of students, staff, visitors and members of the public.
The role focuses on regular patrols, monitoring and awareness, a calm and measured response to incidents, and professional engagement with people across the estate, ensuring it remains well managed, secure and welcoming at all times.
Working Hours & Shift pattern
- Part-time position (24-42 hours per week)
- Rota-based working
- Combination of day and night shifts
- Typical shifts: Days: 7:00am – 7:00pm & Nights: 7:00pm – 7:00am
- Flexibility required to meet operational needs and event activity
Key duties
- Carry out regular security patrols across a 600-acre estate, including buildings, gardens, woodland and grounds (on foot and by vehicle)
- Monitor and operate CCTV systems, maintaining accurate records and incident logs
- Control access to buildings and grounds, including locking and unlocking at scheduled times
- Respond to incidents calmly and in line with agreed procedures
- Engage professionally and respectfully with students, staff, visitors and members of the public
- Provide first aid assistance when required
- Support events, including visitor flow, parking and access control
- Assist reception and gate operations during busy periods
- Maintain the patrol vehicle and security equipment
- Work effectively as part of a small on-site security team

Essential requirements
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a security or patrol role
- Basic IT skills (email, CCTV, record keeping)
- A reasonable level of physical fitness, sufficient to carry out regular foot patrols across a large estate, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and respond appropriately to incidents
- Full UK driving licence (aged 25+ for insurance purposes)
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Successful enhanced DBS check
- Willingness to work days, nights and weekends on a flexible rota
Desirable
- First Aid at Work qualification (or willingness to train)
- Experience working on large estates, campuses or mixed-use sites
- Experience supporting events
