Join a Major National Gas Infrastructure Project
McCarthy & Byrne Solutions Ltd is recruiting experienced Gas Main Layers, Groundworkers, 360 Excavator Operators and Ganger Supervisors to join established utility teams working on a major gas infrastructure project across Birkenhead and the surrounding Merseyside area.
This is an excellent opportunity to secure long-term work on nationally significant utility frameworks delivering gas main replacement, installation and maintenance works for National Gas and Gas Distribution Network Operators.
We're looking for experienced operatives who have worked on gas, water or utility infrastructure projects and understand the importance of working safely around live services while maintaining the highest standards of quality and health & safety.

Key Responsibilities
Groundworkers
- Excavation and trench preparation.
- Installing ducting, chambers and utility protection systems.
- Backfilling and reinstatement to highways, footpaths and landscaped areas.
- Kerbing, edging and concrete works.
- Safe excavation around live underground services.
- Assisting plant operators and utility installation teams.
Gas Main Layers
- Installation and replacement of gas mains and services.
- PE pipe installation.
- Butt Fusion and Electrofusion welding.
- Gas service transfers and new connections.
- Pressure testing and quality inspections.
- Supporting emergency repair works when required.
360 Excavator Operators
- Safe operation of tracked and wheeled excavators.
- Excavating around live utilities.
- Trenching to specification.
- Lifting operations.
- Daily machine inspections and defect reporting.
- Working closely with banksmen and groundworkers.
Ganger Supervisors
- Supervising utility site teams.
- Planning daily activities.
- Delivering toolbox talks.
- Ensuring National Gas compliance.
- Managing labour, plant and materials.
- Completing site documentation and permits.
- Liaising with clients and site management.
- Promoting excellent health & safety standards.
Trenchless Technology Experience (Desirable)
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- Moleing
- Slip-lining
- Pipe Bursting
- Directional Drilling Support
- Cable & Duct Installation
Essential Experience
Previous experience within one or more of the following:
- Gas Infrastructure
- Utility Construction
- Civil Engineering
- Water Infrastructure
- Main Laying
- Service Laying
- Street Works
- Highway Works
- Deep Excavations
- Live Utility Excavations
- Reinstatement Works
Essential Qualifications
Applicants should hold relevant qualifications including:
- NRSWA Operative or Supervisor
- EUSR SHEA Gas
- CAT & Genny
- Emergency First Aid at Work
- CPCS or NPORS 360 Excavator (where applicable)
Gas Operatives Should Ideally Hold
- National Gas Competencies
- PE Butt Fusion
- PE Electrofusion
- Gas Main Laying
- Gas Service Laying
- SCO (Safe Control of Operations)
- Gas Escape Procedures
- Mole
- Slip-line
