Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Fitter

We're now looking for a skilled and motivated Mechanical Maintenance Engineer/Fitter to join our dedicated maintenance team and support the continued success of our production operations.
Key Responsibilities
Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)
- Carry out scheduled PPM tasks on all mechanical plant and equipment in accordance with the maintenance plan.
- Complete accurate maintenance records and update the CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System) accordingly.
- Identify opportunities to improve PPM schedules based on equipment performance and failure trends.
Reactive Maintenance & Fault Finding
- Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns and equipment failures to minimise production downtime.
- Diagnose root causes of mechanical failures and carry out effective repairs.
- Escalate complex issues or major failures to the Maintenance Foreman as appropriate.
Equipment & Plant
- Maintain and repair a range of mechanical plant including batching plants, aggregate conveyors and feeders, mixers, pumps, hydraulic systems, compressors, silos, and ancillary equipment.
- Carry out inspections of structural and mechanical components for signs of wear, fatigue, or damage.
- Assist with the installation and commissioning of new plant and equipment.
- Work safely at height as required.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work in full compliance with site health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Prepare and follow safe systems of work including risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
- Adhere to permit-to-work systems including isolation and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Participate in safety audits, toolbox talks, and near-miss reporting.
Housekeeping & Standards
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment in the workshop and across the site.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and spare parts are correctly stored and accounted for.
- Support stock control and assist in identifying critical spares requirements.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to reliability improvement and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Share knowledge and best practice with colleagues and support the development of apprentices or junior technicians where applicable.
Key Skills and Experience Required
- NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds / BTEC in Engineering or a related field.
- Basic fabrication skills, including drilling, tapping, and cutting.
- Proven experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment — concrete, heavy plant, or construction materials industry is preferred.
- Strong awareness of health & safety in an industrial setting, with a solid understanding of safe working practices.
- Ability to work independently and respond flexibly to production needs.
- Punctual, physically fit, and willing to work in a workshop and factory environment.
- Motivated and reliable, with a strong work ethic and a determination to ensure production levels can be maintained through machine availability.
- Practical experience with the mechanical aspects of production equipment and machinery.
Due to our site location, the ideal candidate must have their own reliable form of transport and be willing to work six or seven days a week if production requirements dictate.
Hours & Benefits
45 hours per week plus overtime and regular weekend work. Pension and health scheme enrolment available.
