About Us

The Disability Resource Centre is an award winning charity supporting people with disabilities and long term health conditions, carers and families across Bedfordshire, Luton and Northamptonshire. As a Disability Confident Leader, we are committed to inclusive, accessible and flexible working.

Job Purpose

The Benefits Adviser will provide accurate, confidential and empathetic advice and support to individuals seeking help with welfare benefits. This includes guidance on benefit eligibility, supporting claims, and assisting with mandatory reconsiderations and appeal paperwork. The role focuses on empowering clients to understand their rights and navigate the benefits system independently. This role does not include tribunal representation.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver one-to-one advice on welfare benefits (including Universal Credit, PIP, ESA, DLA and Attendance Allowance)
Support clients to complete applications, mandatory reconsiderations and appeal paperwork
Explain benefit decisions and entitlements in a clear, accessible way
Liaise with DWP and other agencies where appropriate
Signpost clients to relevant support services, including housing, legal or internal DRC services
Maintain accurate and confidential case records using the CRM system
Keep up to date with welfare benefits legislation and local practice changes
Contribute to service monitoring and reporting
Ensure safeguarding responsibilities are met and referrals made when necessary
Deliver inclusive, culturally sensitive support to all clients

Person Specification

Essential:

Experience in benefits advice
Strong knowledge of the UK benefits system, including disability-related benefits
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an empathetic approach
Ability to support clients with detailed and sometimes complex paperwork
Strong organisational and time management skills
Good IT skills and experience using systems for case recording
High standard of written documentation
Commitment to inclusive, non-judgemental service delivery

Desirable:

Experience working with disabled or vulnerable individuals
Familiarity with appeals processes (e.g. SSCS1 forms)
Understanding of safeguarding principles
Additional language skills
