Full job description

Job Summary:

The Campus Protect Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe, welcoming and secure environment for students, staff, contractors and visitors across Luton Sixth Form College.

Working as part of the Aegis Protect Team, the role combines professional security, safeguarding awareness and positive student engagement to deter crime, prevent incidents and support the College's commitment to providing an outstanding learning environment.

Campus Protect Officers act as visible ambassadors for both Aegis and the College, working collaboratively with college staff to promote safety, wellbeing and respect while responding professionally to incidents and emergencies.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Campus Safety and Security

Maintain a highly visible security presence across all College buildings and external areas.
Conduct regular internal and external patrols to identify security, safety and safeguarding concerns.
Monitor CCTV systems and report any suspicious activity or security breaches.
Protect College property, assets and equipment from theft, damage or misuse.
Ensure all buildings remain secure throughout operational hours.

2. Access Control:

Monitor access and egress to college buildings.
Verify the identity of visitors, contractors and authorised personnel.
Challenge unauthorised individuals professionally and courteously.
Support visitor management procedures and issue visitor passes where required.
Assist during College events, examinations and open evenings.

3. Incident Response:

Respond promptly and professionally to incidents including anti-social behaviour, medical emergencies, fire alarms, intruders and criminal activity.
Take appropriate action to protect life and property until emergency services arrive.
Assist with College lockdown and evacuation procedures.
Complete accurate electronic incident reports before the end of each shift.
Preserve evidence and provide witness statements where required.

4. Safeguarding:

Promote the safety and wellbeing of all students.
Recognise safeguarding concerns and report them immediately using College procedures.
Maintain professional boundaries at all times.
Support Designated Safeguarding Leads when requested.
Complete mandatory safeguarding and Prevent training.
Work in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).

5. Student Engagement

Build positive and professional relationships with students.
Provide reassurance and support while maintaining authority.
Encourage positive behaviour through engagement rather than confrontation.
Act as a visible and approachable member of the College community.
Promote a culture of respect, inclusion and personal responsibility.

6. Partnership Working

Work collaboratively with Student Services, Safeguarding, Estates, Reception and Senior Leadership Teams.
Share relevant information to support student safety and operational resilience.
Attend operational briefings and training sessions.
Support College events and activities when required.

7. Customer Service

Deliver an exceptional customer experience to students, staff and visitors.
Provide directions, assistance and information where appropriate.
Maintain the highest standards of professionalism and presentation.
Support reception and front-of-house duties when operationally required.

8. Health, Safety & Compliance

Promote compliance with all College policies and procedures.
Report hazards, defects and maintenance issues promptly.
Participate in emergency drills and business continuity exercises.
Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, fire safety procedures and Aegis Assignment Instructions.

Qualifications & Skills

Essential

Valid SIA Door Supervisor Licence.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
IT literate with the ability to complete electronic reports.
Eligible to work in the UK.
Willingness to undergo an Enhanced DBS check with Children's Barred List.
Flexible approach to working hours.

Desirable

Previous experience within education, schools, colleges or universities.
First Aid at Work qualification.
Fire Marshal qualification.
ACT Awareness / Counter Terrorism training.
Safeguarding and Prevent training.
Mental Health First Aid.
Customer Service qualification.

Working Conditions

Primarily based within an educational environment.
Combination of indoor and outdoor duties.
Regular walking and standing throughout the shift.
Occasional evening and weekend working to support College events.
Uniform and equipment provided by Aegis Support Services.

Schedule / Shift Pattern

7:30 am - 5:30 pm. Typical hours will be aligned to college operational requirements during term time and non-term time. Flexibility may be required to support College events, examinations, open evenings and emergency response.

Successful candidates will be required to:

Successfully complete Aegis pre-employment screening.
Obtain and maintain an Enhanced DBS with Children's Barred List check.

Pay: £13.45 per hour
