- Project Manager – Bespoke Engineering & Automation Systems
- Location: Barlborough, Derbyshire
- Salary: Up to £50,000, depending on experience
- Contract: Full-time, permanent
- Working pattern: Primarily site-based, with limited home working by agreement
The role:
TBG Solutions designs and manufactures bespoke test, measurement and automation systems for customers operating primarily in the aerospace and defence sectors.
We are looking for an experienced engineering project manager to lead customer projects from initial requirements through design, manufacture, integration, test and final acceptance.
This is an engineering and manufacturing project-delivery role. Applicants must have experience managing the delivery of physical, bespoke engineered equipment, such as:
- Automated test equipment
- Special-purpose machinery
- Industrial automation systems
- Electrical or electronic test systems
- Bespoke production or assembly equipment
- Other complex, low-volume engineered products
Experience limited to IT implementation, digital transformation, software-as-a-service deployment or business-change programmes will not be sufficient for this position.
You do not need to have worked specifically with automated test equipment, but you must understand the challenges involved in delivering bespoke machinery or multidisciplinary engineered systems.
About TBG Solutions:
For more than 25 years, TBG Solutions has provided test, measurement and control solutions to customers across the UK.
Our multidisciplinary teams bring together mechanical, electrical, electronic and software engineering with in-house manufacturing, assembly and system integration. We work closely with customers to understand their requirements and deliver robust, practical solutions to complex engineering challenges.
The successful candidate will report to the Operations Director and work closely with our engineering, manufacturing, purchasing and commercial teams, as well as customers and specialist subcontractors.
Key responsibilities:
You will take ownership of projects from contract award through to customer acceptance. Your responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing customer requirements, specifications, scope and contractual deliverables.
- Producing and maintaining project plans, schedules, budgets and resource requirements.
- Coordinating mechanical, electrical, electronic and software engineering activities.
- Managing projects through design, procurement, manufacture, assembly, integration and test.
- Chairing project launch meetings, design reviews and regular progress meetings.
- Monitoring engineering deliverables, material procurement, subcontract activities and workshop progress.
- Managing project risks, opportunities, assumptions, dependencies and technical issues.
- Controlling project changes and assessing their effect on cost, timing and technical delivery.
- Maintaining accurate project documentation, configuration records and customer reports.
- Monitoring labour, material and subcontract costs against project budgets.
- Managing Factory Acceptance Testing, customer acceptance activities and, where applicable, installation or Site Acceptance Testing.
- Acting as the principal point of contact for customers throughout project delivery.
- Escalating issues promptly and developing practical recovery plans where projects move away from schedule or budget.
- Supporting continuous improvement in project planning, reporting and delivery processes.
- Providing guidance and direction to engineers and other project team members.
The role may involve occasional travel to customer and supplier sites within the UK.
Essential experience:
Applicants must be able to demonstrate:
- Successful delivery of bespoke engineering, machinery, automation or equipment projects in a commercial environment.
- Experience managing projects that include the design, manufacture, assembly and testing of a physical product.
- Responsibility for project schedules, budgets, resources, risks and customer communication.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- An understanding of engineering project lifecycles, including requirements, design, procurement, build, integration, test and acceptance.
- Experience of project change control, document control and configuration management.
- The ability to identify delivery risks and implement effective mitigation or recovery actions.
- Strong commercial awareness, including estimating, costing and budget control.
- Confidence communicating with customers, senior managers, engineers, production staff, suppliers and subcontractors.
- The ability to manage several priorities and work effectively with limited supervision.
- Strong written communication, reporting and presentation skills.
- Competence using Microsoft Project, Excel, PowerPoint and other standard business systems.
Desirable experience:
Experience or working knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial:
- Automated test equipment
- Special-purpose machinery
- Aerospace or defence engineering
- Electrical or electronic systems
- Mechanical design and manufacture
- Industrial control and automation
- Software-controlled equipment
- PCB or cable-harness assembly
- Control-panel or rack build
- Machining and fabricated components
- Factory Acceptance Testing or Site Acceptance Testing
- Installation and commissioning
- Regulated or highly controlled engineering environments
A recognised project-management qualification would be beneficial but is not essential where applicants can demonstrate strong, relevant engineering project-delivery experience.
Benefits:
In addition to a competitive salary, you can expect:
- Salary up to £50,000 DOE.
- 22 days holiday (including 3 days factory closure between Christmas and New Year).
- Non-contributory health scheme.
- Pension scheme.
- Electric Car Scheme.
- Electric Car Charging.
- Additional annual leave entitlement for long service.

About you
You will be practical, organised and commercially aware, with the confidence to lead multidisciplinary teams and communicate openly with customers.
