Ipswich Borough Council have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Health Officer to join our Private Sector Housing Team. As part of the Public Protection service area, you will play a vital role in protecting and improving the health of people living, working and relaxing in Ipswich. The service brings together teams who hold a highly visible and respected position across the Council.
The Private Sector Housing Team delivers a wide range of functions and ensures compliance with statutory housing standards in the private rented sector. Your day‑to‑day work will include investigating housing disrepair complaints, assess potential overcrowding, and inspect and licensing Houses in Multiple Occupation. You will also support the administration of grants, including adaptations for disabled residents and the renovation of empty homes.
In line with the Renters’ Rights Act, you will additionally support enforcement of the new Decent Homes Standard, respond to tenant complaints relating to unlawful evictions or harassment, ensure compliance with strengthened landlord duties, and contribute to improved transparency and data reporting requirements across the sector.
New opportunities are emerging within the team to contribute to proactive projects and collaborative initiatives aimed at raising standards across the private rented sector.
You must hold a degree or Diploma in Environmental Health (or an equivalent accredited qualification) and be competent in the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS). You must be professionally registered as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) or working toward registration and be a member of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), meeting its professional and continuing development requirements. You will have excellent communication skills, and a commitment to customer care, whilst having the ability to take on a varied caseload and work independently. You will be a strong team player with a positive outlook.
