Warehouse Operative – Job Description

Job Title: Warehouse Operative

Location: Northampton

Reports to: Warehouse Supervisor

Department: Warehouse & Distribution

Purpose of the Role

The Warehouse Operative plays a key role in ensuring the efficient receipt, storage, picking, packing, and dispatch of goods within the warehouse. The role supports the wider warehouse and distribution team to maintain high standards of accuracy, safety, and productivity.

Key Responsibilities

Inbound Operations

Goods-in processing — unload deliveries, check items against delivery notes, report discrepancies.
Stock put-away — move items to correct storage locations safely and accurately.

Outbound Operations

Order picking — pick items accurately according to pick lists or handheld devices.
Packing & labelling — prepare items for dispatch, ensuring correct packaging and documentation.
Dispatch loading — load goods onto vehicles safely and efficiently.

Stock Control

Assist with stock counts and cycle checks.
Report stock discrepancies or damaged goods promptly.

Warehouse Standards

Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
Follow all health & safety procedures, including manual handling guidelines.
Operate equipment such as pallet trucks or forklifts (if trained and authorised).

Teamwork & Communication

Work collaboratively with the Senior Warehouse Operative and wider team.
Communicate issues, delays, or risks to supervisors promptly.
Support new starters or temporary staff when required.

Skills & Experience

Essential

Experience in a warehouse, logistics, or distribution environment.
Ability to follow instructions and work to targets.
Good attention to detail and accuracy.
Basic IT or handheld scanner skills.
Physically able to lift, move, and handle goods safely.

Desirable

Forklift licence (Counterbalance or Reach).
Experience with warehouse management systems (WMS).
Experience in furniture, bulky goods, or fragile items handling.

Behaviours & Competencies

Reliable, punctual, and committed.
Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Safety-conscious and compliant with procedures.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions

Warehouse environment with manual handling.
Shift patterns may vary depending on operational needs.
PPE must be worn as required.

Pay: Up to £28,000.00 per year
