“You’re a veterinary receptionist? That must be lovely… cuddling puppies and kittens all day!”
If only it were that simple.
The reality couldn’t be more different.
The hardest job in our practice isn’t performed by a vet or a nurse.
It’s performed by our reception team.
Why?
Because they’re expected to know a little about almost everything.
They celebrate families bringing home a new puppy.
They comfort owners whose pet has suddenly become seriously ill.
They support people through one of the hardest days of their lives.
They answer emergency phone calls.
They manage a constantly changing appointment diary.
They dispense prescription medication.
They discuss preventative healthcare.
They help clients navigate insurance claims.
They support the vets and nurses.
They solve problems.
They help keep the practice running.
All whilst answering multiple telephone lines, welcoming clients through the door and ensuring every person who walks into the practice feels listened to, respected and cared for.
It’s busy.
It’s emotionally demanding.
It’s sometimes stressful.
But it is also one of the most rewarding jobs you can do.

Veterinary reception is unlike any other receptionist role.
There are very few jobs where you’ll need to understand so many different aspects of a business.
We’re looking for someone who is naturally curious. Someone who enjoys learning, solving problems and finding better ways of doing things.
You’ll need to become confident using our veterinary practice management system, Microsoft Office and other software we use every day.
We’re also looking for someone who enjoys technology, learns new systems quickly and takes pride in solving problems rather than simply reporting them. Whether it’s mastering new software or helping resolve day-to-day technical issues using our guidance, you’ll enjoy finding solutions and helping the practice run as smoothly as possible.
We don’t expect you to know everything on your first day, but we do hope you’ll be the kind of person who enjoys learning, asks questions and is always looking for better ways of doing things.
As you grow in the role, there will be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and help improve the way the practice operates.

About you
We’re ideally looking for someone with previous experience working as a Veterinary Receptionist or within a veterinary practice. There is no other receptionist role that requires such a broad range of knowledge and skills.
However, if you have exceptional customer service skills, are naturally curious, learn quickly and believe you have what it takes, we’d still love to hear from you.
You’ll also:
- Deliver exceptional customer service.
- Remain calm under pressure.
- Be compassionate, kind and resilient.
- Be organised and take pride in getting the little things right.
- Learn new systems quickly.
- Enjoy working as part of a close-knit team.
- Want to make a genuine difference to people and their pets every single day.
At St Clair Veterinary Care you’ll never be “just a receptionist.”
You’ll be a valued member of the team whose ideas are listened to, whose contribution is recognised and who has the opportunity to grow alongside the practice.
We can teach our systems.
We can teach our procedures.
What we can’t teach is compassion, kindness, resilience and a genuine desire to help people and their pets.

If you’re looking for a place where your ideas are valued, your contribution is recognised and you can continue to develop your skills, we’d love to hear from you.
