Full job description

We’re looking for someone who shares our love for church buildings and wants to help them thrive as welcoming places of worship, community, and heritage. As the first point of contact for Llandaff in the Church Buildings team, this role works with a wide range of people and churches — each with different needs and ideas. The role is focussed on providing administrative support for others as they progress through the church’s Faculty system, helping them develop their plans, and bringing projects to life.

With our growing focus on environmental sustainability and achieving carbon net-zero, the role helps to signpost initiatives such as Eco Church, churchyard biodiversity, and energy audits.

Strong administrative skills are essential: the DAC secretary manage systems for quinquennial inspections, energy audits, and online faculty applications (training will be provided). Work takes place across the Diocese of Llandaff’s varied communities – urban and rural, post-industrial Valleys to Vale of Glamorgan – and involves collaboration with volunteers and officers in Ministry Areas across South Wales, supporting a wide variety of church buildings.

Key Duties

· Provide quality advice and support to our clergy and volunteers as we all work towards a sustainable future for our church buildings for outreach, mission and improved visitor welcome, including community use and accessibility, working with the church surveyors and architects and the Ministry Area (MA) Support team

· Assist with the preparation of Faculty applications

· Act as DAC Secretary to administer the work of the Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) and the Online Faculty System. This will include

o preparing agendas, briefings and minutes,

o setting up and attending DAC meetings (including technical setup for hybrid meetings),

o arranging and attending site visits, booking venues

o maintaining a list of members of the DAC

o liaising with Diocesan Registrar regarding DAC’s decisions and recommendations

o communicating DAC’s decisions and advice to local church representatives in Ministry Areas

· Administer the emergency permission procedure in liaison with Archdeacons and DAC

· Liaise with specialist advisors and consultees regarding church building visits

· Act as interface with Ministry Areas and their volunteer Wardens and facilities managers, explaining procedures and technical matters in clear and straightforward language, steering churches towards appropriate processes and providing information to and from DAC as required

· Maintain and develop good working relationships with the Representative Body of the Church in Wales (RB) and heritage bodies such as CADW, RCAHMW, local conservation officers and amenity societies

· Help to administer redundancy procedures for churches including disposal of church contents

· Signpost churches to information and guidance on grants and other funding opportunities for church buildings, working with the Stewardship & Fundraising Manager

· Plan and deliver training sessions and events, including liaising with speakers, preparing programmes, managing bookings, and overseeing practical arrangements such as rooms and refreshments.

· Undertake any other reasonable duties in line with competencies as required

Experience and skills

· Good communication skills with the capability to build strong working relationships with a wide range of colleagues – clergy, church representatives, buildings officers etc.

· Strong organisational and planning skills to anticipate and plan for work in advance.

· Competent using MSOffice and Zoom

· Knowledge of buildings and heritage legislation and its application in a church context

· An interest in the environmental sustainability of church buildings and climate change issues

· An understanding of the needs and demands of modern church life

· Qualification or experience in historic building conservation, heritage, archaeology, or planning

· Interest and enthusiasm in historic buildings and places of worship

· Able to remain calm under pressure and effectively prioritise

· Proactive self-starter with initiative and the capacity to work with minimal supervision

· An ability to get on with people of all ages and abilities with good communication skills and an ability to explain sometimes difficult concepts in easy-to-understand language; diplomatic and professional when handling sensitive or complex issues

· Supportive of the aims and mission of the Church in Wales

· Welsh speaker or willing to learn

· Flexibility to work occasional evening and weekends

· Willing to travel both within the Diocese and beyond

· A full UK driving licence and use of a car for work purposes as you will need to attend occasional site visits at churches which are not accessible by public transport
