Our client is a well-established, family-run specialist contractor with over 35 years’ experience delivering environmental and vegetation management projects across the UK.
They are recognised within the industry for operating a wide range of bespoke and specialist machinery designed to access terrain and environments that standard agricultural or plant equipment cannot. Their projects include large-scale government and infrastructure contracts involving grass seeding, wildflower planting, mowing, vegetation clearance, and specialist environmental works.

Due to continued growth, they are now looking to appoint a hands-on Workshop Manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the workshop, manage fitters and engineers, and ensure the reliability and performance of their specialist machinery fleet.
The Role
This is a varied and technically interesting role managing workshop operations across agricultural machinery, plant equipment, hydraulics, bespoke machinery, and specialist environmental equipment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating workshop activities, managing maintenance schedules, supporting fitters and engineers, and ensuring machinery downtime is kept to a minimum across major environmental and infrastructure contracts.
This position would suit someone from an agricultural engineering, plant, HGV, or specialist machinery background who enjoys a hands-on management role and working on unique equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the workshop and engineering activities
- Manage fitters and engineers responsible for maintaining the machinery fleet
- Coordinate servicing, repairs, diagnostics, and preventative maintenance schedules
- Lead fault finding across hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and diesel systems
- Ensure machinery downtime is minimised and fleet reliability maintained
- Support machinery improvements, bespoke modifications, and workshop efficiency
- Allocate workloads and manage workshop priorities effectively
- Maintain engineering standards, workshop organisation, and stock/equipment control
- Support field teams and operators with technical issues and breakdown support
- Ensure all workshop activities are completed in line with health & safety requirements
Requirements
- Previous experience managing workshops or engineering teams
- Strong background working on:
- Agricultural machinery
- Plant machinery
- HGVs
- Special purpose machinery
- Environmental machinery
- Strong hydraulic and mechanical fault-finding skills
- Good understanding of diesel engines and electrical systems
- Hands-on leadership approach with strong organisational skills
- Ability to manage workloads, priorities, and engineering standards
- Welding/fabrication experience beneficial but not essential
- Full UK driving licence

Pay: £40,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
