Your next role

The Handyperson role will deliver routine repairs and improvements across Council-owned properties. The postholder will visit tenant homes and support them with basic DIY and work to help sustain their tenancies.

This role involves carrying out a range of minor repairs and maintenance tasks within council-owned homes to ensure properties and communal areas remain safe, functional, and well maintained. The role typically includes fixing doors, putting up shelves, locks, taps, and fittings, carrying out small carpentry and plumbing jobs, and addressing health and safety issues promptly.

The handyperson works directly in tenants’ homes, providing a reliable and customer-focused service, while following council policies, health and safety regulations, and safeguarding procedures. They also report larger repair needs, maintain accurate records of work completed, and contribute to maintaining decent living standards across the council’s housing stock.

The role also requires effective tenant engagement, robust risk management, and a commitment to continuous improvement to safeguard residents, colleagues, and the wider community.

What You'll Bring

Experience in carrying out general maintenance.
Demonstrate knowledge of participating in good practices i.e. Health & Safety.
Appreciation and understanding of the Social Housing Regulation Act and the consumer standards.
Excellent communication skills.
A problem solver who can use their own initiative.
Able to work under own initiative and managing caseload.
A good level of fitness is required as you will also assist with the clearance of belongings and waste from empty homes and disposal at the local recycling centre.
Ability to handle equipment and machinery used in DIY, cleaning and gardening.

A full UK driving licence to travel between sites as required.

The ability to travel throughout the Borough will be required and access to a vehicle.

You will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
