Clinical Practice

The post holder will undertake a comprehensive range of specialist occupational health activities, working autonomously to assess, advise and manage employees in relation to their work and health. This includes:

Assessing fitness for work at pre-employment and during employment, taking account of relevant legislation
Undertaking complex case management including sickness absence, rehabilitation and return to work planning
Providing specialist advice on workplace adjustments, disability and equality legislation
Carrying out health surveillance programmes and interpreting findings
Undertaking workplace risk assessments and advising on health hazards
Managing blood and body fluid exposure incidents
Maintaining accurate, confidential clinical records in line with professional and legal standards.

The post holder will act as a senior clinician and role model the following:
Clinical Leadership and Professional Practice- providing professional leadership and guidance to the Occupational Health team, support complex case decision-making, uphold clinical standards and contribute to governance, audit and continuous improvement of practice.
Service Delivery and Improvement- contribute to the planning, delivery and development of Occupational Health services to ensure provision is safe, effective and responsive to organisational and client needs.
Management and Supervision- support the management and supervision of Occupational Health staff, including mentoring, clinical supervision and contribution to appraisal and development processes.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement- develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, providing clear, professional advice and communicating complex and sensitive information appropriately.
Health Promotion and Wellbeing- contribute to the development and delivery of health promotion and wellbeing initiatives.
Professional Development- maintain current NMC registration as a SCPHN Occupational Health Nurse.

The Occupational Heatlh Shared Service is hosted by the Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) and is made up of a team of experienced occupational health doctors and nurses, supported by administrators. The majority hold specialist qualifications and many have over 20 years’ experience in occupational health.
The service has a strong commercial customer base providing first class professional Occupational Health Services to other NHS organisations as well as small / medium size enterprises (SME). One of the main objectives for the service over the next five years is to consolidate the shared service across. This is reflected in the job plan.
The Occupational Health Service operates in line with the principles laid down in the NHS Employers “Your occupational health service” guidance October 2019 and the most recently updated SEQOHS standards April 2023 .
We place a strong focus on “a high quality, clinically-led, evidence-based service equitable and accessible impartial, approachable and receptive to both clients and employer which contributes to improved organisational productivity for our host Trust / Organisations we serve. The OH service is accredited by SEQOHS’.

JOB PURPOSE

The post holder will deliver, lead and continuously improve a high-quality Occupational Health service, providing specialist advice on employee fitness for work, workplace health protection and health promotion. The role involves autonomous clinical decision-making, complex case management and provision of evidence-based recommendations, alongside responsibility for clinical leadership, staff supervision and contribution to service development and governance.
