Job Summary
The Alternative School offers a holistic and flexible school experience that has been designed to respond to the needs of young people who are unable to remain in mainstream education. We are all responsible for working holistically with our young people to ensure they leave TAS as well-rounded individuals who will make a positive transition into further education, employment or training.
Our education programmes can each cater for up to 190 pupils every academic year across a number of schools. Our pupils require a smaller, nurturing and individual approach to their education and may include young people who are excluded, at risk of exclusion, previously home educated, children who are looked after, SEN (diagnosed and UN diagnosed), High Risk Assessments, YOT education orders, Drugs & Alcohol misuse, school phobic, victims of bullying, have severe mental health issues, trauma in their background and many more reasons for being referred to us. We have an ‘Open Door’ admissions policy and we work hard to ensure that every child referred to us is offered a place and feels happy, nurtured and supported.
We are seeking to appoint a hard-working, conscientious caretaker to help maintain and secure our premises to a high standard, ensuring all our buildings and grounds provide a safe, clean and welcoming environment for all our pupils, staff and visitors. You will have experience in minor repairs and have health and safety knowledge / experience. A level of flexibility for additional hours will be required to support the needs of the school.
The successful candidate will be a proactive and positive person, who is approachable and has a calm professional manner. You will have the ability to communicate well in addition to being flexible in approach and always acting with integrity.
You will be able to plan and prioritise your workload effectively and work with minimal supervision providing weekly job reports. You are expected to take your holidays outside term time.
Responsibilities
- Health & Safety & Compliance
· Statutory testing of mandatory areas ie emergency lights ect…
· Ensure knowledgeable about key site risk assessments
· Monitor health & safety standards and ensure compliance
· Act as an ambassador for all health & safety & compliance matters
Site Security
· Responsible key holder, work in hand with others to ensure site security
· Act as an emergency response cover
· Monitor all utilities on site
· Conduct routine inspections of the full site and report any issues
· Liase with contractors and oversee work when necessary
Agricultural Support & Animal Welfare
· Daily animal husbandry ensuring all paperwork is kept up to date
· Daily health observations
· Monitor fencing and infrastructure is secure, act as point of contact for all repairs
· Cover for other staff members when on holiday
Maintenance & Grounds Keeping
· Keep up to date with the general maintenance plan & minor repairs
· Ensure the premises are clean, safe and secure at all times
· Responsible for waste management and biomass feeder
· Monitor fencing and infrastructure is secure, act as point of contact for all repairs
· Respond to any urgent maintenance or site-related issues
Educational & Portage Support
· Open and/or close the school premises as required
· Help with setting up educational events as required
· Responsible for all deliveries
· General porterage as requested
Horticultural
· Responsible for assisting with daily upkeep
· Ensure the horticultural plan is followed and report back on any issues
· Cover for other staff members when on holiday
Experience
- Proven experience in facilities or estate caretaker who possesses a strong background in minor building repairs, keyholding security, and health and safety compliance, including statutory testing for emergency systems.
- Preferred direct experience in animal husbandry, livestock observation, and maintaining agricultural infrastructure like fencing.
- Demonstrate practical skills in horticulture, grounds keeping, and managing plant machinery like biomass feeders
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively in English
- Prior experience in managing safety protocols and ensuring compliance with health & safety standards
This is a highly varied role combining traditional school caretaking with animal husbandry, horticulture, and compliance management. Acting with integrity and minimal supervision, you will plan your own weekly workload and provide regular progress reports to management.
Pay: From £27,000.00 per year
