Overview
We are seeking an experienced bookkeeper to join our busy and growing practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the bookkeeping for a varied portfolio of SME clients, including limited companies, sole traders, and partnerships. In addition, you will support the payroll staff with processing both weekly and monthly payroll. As we are a small team this is a hands-on role requiring strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while supporting other team members. You will work closely with our accountants to ensure smooth month-end and year-end procedures. This is a full-time post of 35 hours per week and salary will be dependent on experience.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping and VAT
· Processing payments, invoices, income and receipts and entering data into accounting software or databases.
· Maintaining debtors and creditors ledgers
· Reconciling balance sheet accounts, including bank, VAT, PAYE etc.
· Completing VAT returns under various schemes (Standard, Flat Rate, Cash Accounting).
· Prioritising workloads to ensure both internal deadlines and external deadlines are met
· Liaising with clients to obtain missing information and respond to queries
· Prepare relevant reports as and when required
· Gaining knowledge and understanding through external training and reading of current and up to date legislation and communicating where necessary.
· Provide bookkeeping support for a range of clients using cloud-based systems such as Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage
· Informing accountants of any inaccuracies / inconsistencies
Payroll & Pensions
· Support the team by helping with payroll processing, ensuring accurate and timely submissions under RTI.
· Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with PAYE, pension, and statutory requirements.
Management Accounts and Support
· Provide support to senior staff in assisting with the preparation of management accounts, MTD returns, client advisory work, budget analysis, and business planning.
Other Duties
· Communicate effectively with clients and colleagues to deliver a high-quality service.
· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards, tax legislation, and compliance requirements.
· Contribute to process improvements and development of accounting systems.
· Work effectively as part of a small team, taking on whatever tasks are needed
· Helping with administrative duties.
Skills and experience
Essential
· At least two years bookkeeping experience.
· Sound knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping and VAT.
· Experience with cloud accounting software (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent).
· Sound knowledge of Excel
· Excellent communication skills and ability to manage client relationships.
· Ability to manage own workload and deadlines with excellent time management skills.
· High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
· Working as part of a team.
Desirable
· Hold a bookkeeping qualification (or be studying towards one).
· Payroll experience.
· Working within a practice environment.
