Job Title: HLTA - Higher Level Teaching Assistant
Location: Red Balloon Worthing Learner Centre
Reports to: SENDCo
Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm (finish time negotiable)
Salary: £30,000 pro rata term time only – 38 weeks. Actual salary - £25,154

Role Overview

The Higher Level Teaching Assistant will provide targeted academic and pastoral support to learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN), with a particular focus on Maths and Science.

The postholder will work closely with teaching staff, the SENDCo, and wider professionals to ensure that learning is accessible, personalised, and aligned with each learner’s individual needs. The role combines academic intervention with relational mentoring to support both educational progress and emotional wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

1. Academic Support (Maths & Science Focus)

Deliver small group and 1:1 intervention sessions in Maths and Science.
Adapt learning materials to meet individual needs, including EHCP targets where appropriate.
Support learners to access core subject content within lessons.
Reinforce key concepts and skills to improve attainment and confidence.
Monitor and record progress, feeding back to teaching staff and the SENDCo.

2. SEN Support and Inclusion

Support learners with identified SEN, including SEMH, autism, ADHD, and other additional needs.
Contribute to the development and delivery of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), learner passports, and support strategies.
Implement agreed strategies consistently across the day to support engagement and regulation.
Work collaboratively with staff to ensure learning experiences are appropriately differentiated.

3. Mentoring and Pastoral Support

Build strong, trusting relationships with learners to support engagement and attendance.
Provide emotional support and help learners develop self-regulation and resilience.
Act as a key adult for identified learners, supporting their wider development.
Liaise with families/carers where appropriate to support consistency.

4. Collaboration and Communication

Work closely with teaching staff to plan and deliver effective support.
Liaise with the SENDCo and contribute to reviews and updates of learner support plans.
Attend team meetings, briefings, and CPD sessions.
Share insights and strategies with colleagues to support whole-Centre practice.

5. Safeguarding and Wellbeing

Maintain a strong awareness of safeguarding practices and follow all procedures.
Record concerns and incidents accurately using the Centre's recording systems (e.g. CPOMS).
Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all learners.

6. Professional Development

Engage in ongoing CPD to develop expertise in SEN, mentoring, and subject knowledge.
Contribute to the wider development of practice across the Centre.

Person Specification

Essential

Experience supporting young people with SEN, particularly SEMH needs.
Strong Maths and/or Science knowledge (GCSE minimum; A-level or equivalent desirable).
Experience delivering targeted interventions or small group support.
Ability to build positive, professional relationships with learners.
Good organisational and communication skills.
Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice.

Desirable

Experience in an alternative provision or similar setting.
Knowledge of EHCP processes and SEN strategies.
Relevant qualification (e.g. HLTA status, mentoring qualification, degree in Maths/Science or related field).
Experience working collaboratively with external professionals.
