Overview
We are seeking a reliable, practical, and highly versatile Grounds Maintenance & Estate Handyman to assist with the upkeep and maintenance of a beautiful private Grade II Listed Manor House set within approximately 30 acres of landscaped grounds and paddocks
The estate includes formal gardens, a walled garden, lawns, woodland areas, an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, outbuildings, driveways, and various estate structures. This is a varied, hands-on role requiring a proactive individual with a broad range of practical skills who takes pride in maintaining both the property and grounds to an exceptional standard.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable carrying out gardening and grounds maintenance duties as they are undertaking general property repairs, basic decorating, preventative maintenance, and estate improvement projects. No two days will be the same, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working across a wide range of indoor and outdoor maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds & Estate Maintenance
- Maintain lawns, borders, hedges, trees, pathways, and landscaped areas to a high standard.
- Carry out mowing, strimming, pruning, planting, weeding, fertilising, and seasonal garden maintenance.
- Assist in the upkeep and development of the estate’s walled garden and ornamental planting schemes.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping machinery and equipment safely and effectively.
- Manage irrigation systems and ensure appropriate watering of gardens and planted areas.
- Keep driveways, footpaths, terraces, and outdoor recreational areas clean, tidy, and presentable.
- Assist with the maintenance of the estate’s tennis court and surrounding grounds.
- Undertake leaf clearance, storm clean-up, and seasonal maintenance tasks.
Property Maintenance & Handyman Duties
- Carry out general repairs and maintenance throughout the manor house, estate buildings, and outbuildings.
- Perform basic painting and decorating, including preparation, touch-up work, staining, varnishing, and minor refurbishment projects.
- Repair and maintain doors, gates, fences, locks, windows, fixtures, fittings, and estate furniture.
- Undertake basic carpentry, plumbing, and maintenance tasks where appropriate.
- Assist with routine inspections and preventative maintenance to identify and address issues before they become significant problems.
- Maintain and repair estate pathways, fencing, garden structures, sheds, greenhouses, and outdoor furniture.
- Support contractors and specialist tradespeople when required.
- Assist with the upkeep and routine maintenance of the indoor swimming pool facilities and associated plant areas (training can be provided where necessary).
- Help ensure all estate buildings remain safe, secure, and well-presented.
General Estate Duties
- Monitor the condition of the estate and proactively identify maintenance requirements.
- Maintain tools, machinery, vehicles, and equipment in good working order.
- Ensure stores, workshops, and maintenance areas are kept clean and organised.
- Adhere to all health and safety procedures and estate policies.
- Assist with occasional estate projects and improvements as directed.
Requirements
- Proven experience in grounds maintenance, estate maintenance, property maintenance, gardening, landscaping, or a similar role.
- Strong practical handyman skills with experience carrying out general repairs and maintenance.
- Basic painting and decorating experience.
- Knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, building maintenance, or mechanical repairs would be advantageous.
- Experience operating garden machinery, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work independently, manage workloads effectively, and use initiative.
- Good attention to detail and pride in maintaining high standards.
- Physically fit and capable of undertaking manual work in all weather conditions.
- Understanding of health and safety procedures relevant to maintenance and grounds work.
- Experience working on private estates, country houses, listed buildings, or similar environments would be highly desirable.
- Full UK driving licence essential.
