Job Summary

We are inviting applications from compassionate and dedicated professionals who hold the RSPH Certificate and Diploma / Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology to join our Mortuary team in a fulltime, permanent role as a senior Anatomical Pathology technician.

The role is varied and can at times be emotionally demanding, so we are seeking someone who demonstrates exceptional sensitivity, discretion, and respect for confidentiality. Strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent organisation and timemanagement abilities, and a commitment to teamwork are essential. You will work closely with colleagues on a daily basis, contributing to a service that makes a genuine difference during some of the most critical moments for families and professionals alike.

The position will include rotation, working between the LGI & SJUH mortuaries.

The department operates an out of hours On-call rota for evenings, Bank holidays and weekends, participation in the rota will be required.

What you will bring to the role

You will be a competent member of the department having the specialist knowledge and skills necessary to perform a wide range of specialist techniques that contribute towards the provision of the mortuary service to the Trust and to HM Coroner.

You will:

Perform a wide range of routine and advanced post mortem procedures including advanced autopsy, forensic and infection procedures. These are highly developed physical skills where accuracy is important. Eg dissection and reconstruction of bodies (including facial reconstruction), suturing, evisceration of organs.
Plan the day-to-day activities within the mortuary in the absence of the Senior APT Site Lead , and to provide cover on other sites as required
Give professional advice, and to communicate accurately sensitive and / or complex information to users of the service in a manner that is in accordance with departmental procedures. (Examples of users are: pathologists, clinical staff, HM Coroner, HM Coroner’s Officers, police officers, funeral directors and bereavement nurses).
Be required to work alone and independently, for example when working on-call or when performing highly specialized tasks.
Have knowledge and understanding of the Human Tissue Act and the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and its impact on the Mortuary Services and understand the Trust’s HTA Pathology Licence structure and your responsibilities.
Provide training to technical and support staff.
Participate actively in departmental quality assurance activities including performing audits and assisting with maintaining external accreditation and regulatory compliance.
Communicate with bereaved relatives regarding sensitive situations, supporting them during patient visits.
