Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a Clinical Coding Specialist to join our experienced and supportive Clinical Coding team. This role is ideal for people who may not yet fully know the profession but are interested in developing specialist expertise in a vital behindthescenes NHS role.

What is clinical coding?

Clinical coders translate information from patient recordssuch as diagnoses, treatments and proceduresinto nationally recognised codes. These codes are essential: they support patient safety, clinical research, service improvement and ensure the Trust is accurately funded for the care it provides.

As a Clinical Coding Specialist, you will focus on more complex and specialist patient cases, working closely with clinicians, auditors and fellow coders to ensure data is accurate, consistent and high quality. You’ll become a local expert, supporting colleagues with queries, mentoring newer coders and helping to improve standards across the service.

You’ll also:

Analyse detailed clinical records and apply national coding rules
Work with clinicians to clarify and resolve complex cases
Lead and contribute to audits and quality improvement projects
Share knowledge and help develop good practice within your team

This post is offered under Annex 21, which means it’s designed as a training and development opportunity. If you’re not yet fully qualified, we’ll support you to achieve the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ), with structured milestones and increasing pay as you progress. Pay and progression

Under Annex 21, you’ll start at a percentage of the Band 5 salary, increasing as you meet training milestones:

Entry level: 65%
After Year 1 audit: 70%
After Year 2 audit: 75%
On gaining NCCQ: Band 5 salary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is looking for a Clinical Coding Specialist to join our experienced and supportive Clinical Coding team. This role is ideal for people who may not yet fully know the profession but are interested in developing specialist expertise in a vital behindthescenes NHS role.

Why you should join our Team

The Clinical Coding Department is a large and diverse team with a strong work ethic and high standards. The team work mainly from home barring a few exceptions by choice. This is because of our Trust EPR and scanning service enables our team to code digitally.

We ask that the teams attend the LTHT site a minimum of two times per year or for business needs such as certain training, equipment failure and operational requirements. This will ensure that staff can build and maintain relationships with other team members.

As a department we rotate the clinical coders assigned job plans every six months to ensure our clinical coders maintain their skill mix.

The department has a training and audit function with 3 auditors, a trainer and an assistant trainer. This is to ensure the continued improvements in the depth and quality of our clinical coding as well as support the trainees undertaking our annex 21 training plan for the ACC qualification.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need to know everything already. We’re looking for people who:

Enjoy working with complex information and have strong attention to detail
Can concentrate for sustained periods and work accurately to deadlines
Communicate clearly and confidently with a range of professionals
Are motivated to learn, develop specialist skills and support others

Experience in clinical coding, healthcare administration, audit, analysis or medical terminology is helpfulbut enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment are just as important.

What you will bring to the role

(ACC) Clinical Coding Accreditation or willing to work towards within three years.

Education
Evidence of at least 5 GCSEs A*-C (or equivalent), including English Language, Maths and Science, with a commitment to continued professional development.

Strong attention to detail
Provide example of working accurately with detailed information and minimising errors.

Ability to analyse and interpret complex information
Evidence of analysing written information (e.g. documents, records, reports), extract and interpret complex clinical information and applying judgement or rules, while Demonstrating awareness of handling sensitive or confidential information appropriately

Ability to work independently and manage workload
Evidence of organising own work, prioritising tasks and meeting deadlines.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Demonstrates collaborative working, supporting colleagues or sharing knowledge.

Ability to maintain concentration and accuracy over sustained periods
Evidence of roles or activities requiring prolonged focus and careful handling of information.

Good IT skills
Experience using standard Microsoft applications (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams) or similar systems.

Experience

Experience within an acute trust, working collaboratively with clinicians, senior managers and other stakeholders would be desirable as would experience in a Clinical Coding role.
