Locum Consultant in the department of Leeds Clinical Genomics Service

We are excited to advertise a 6 month full-time (10 PA) Locum Consultant Clinical Geneticist post. This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join our team in the Leeds Clinical Genomics Service (LCGS) based at Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This fixed-term post gives the successful candidate an opportunity to experience working within LCGS with possible potential to apply for a substantive post with our team in the future.

If shortlisted, you will be required to give a 8-minute presentation on:

“The changing role of the Clinical Geneticist: where will we be in 10 years?”

Interviews will be held on Thursday 25th June face to face in Joseph’s Well Offices near the Leeds General Infirmary Hospital site.

Job Summary

The Leeds Clinical Genomics Service (LCGS) provides Clinical Genetics and Genomics services to a diverse population of c.4 million across a large, varied geographical area. The service comprises an experienced team of Consultant Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Genomic Associates and Genetic Research Nurses/Practitioners, as well as Specialty Trainees, Clinical Fellows and trainee Genetic Counsellors, supported by a large clinical administrative team. LCGS is a member of the North East & Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service (NEY GMS), and the service works closely with the Regional Clinical Genetics services based in Newcastle and Sheffield.

LCGS is based at Leeds General Infirmary in Leeds, with the Central Lab of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH) situated at the nearby St. James’s University Hospital. Genetics clinics are held in the Leeds hospitals, a satellite unit in Hull and virtually. In addition to providing general and specialist genetics clinics, LCGS contributes to a variety of multidisciplinary teams including oncology, fetal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology and musculoskeletal services.

The post holder will provide consultant cover for Leeds and regional paediatric and adult general genetics clinics. The specialist activity may cover areas such as prenatal clinics, cancer clinics, Genetic Cardiac (Inherited Cardiac Conditions) clinic and/or other areas of the post holder’s interest.

What you will bring to the role

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join our forward-thinking team. This post will provide the successful applicant the opportunity of working within an innovative and supportive team. Applications are invited from those with rare disease and cancer interests and there are opportunities and support to develop specialist clinical interests. Successful candidates will contribute to a wide variety of local and regional projects including research and innovation, service development and transformation, and the education and training of medical students, doctors and other health professionals.

The successful applicant should possess MRCP or MRCPCH (or equivalent) and have established skills in Clinical Genetics. Ideally the successful candidate will commence this post in July 2026 and so should either be included on the Specialist Register at interview, admitted to the Register by post commencement if currently within a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.
